Our home

Our home is a national historical monument, situated in the centre of a regional capital, Leeuwarden (ca. 90.000 inhabitants). You live like a castle owner, sipping a drink in the eclectic library, working on your creative skills in the atmospheric atelier, fixing some tapas at the ground floor kitchenette to serve in the tiled courtyard, playing on line games in the writers room or surfing the internet in the former antique kitchen to have a look a the touristic possibilities awaiting. Or exploring our dvd film library on the plasma screen in one of the living rooms, trying the cello or guitar of just listen to music of your choice in the yellow salon, making a super dinner in the very airy and comfortable kitchen/dining room. And all rooms are different and stylish, like all the five bedrooms. One of them even has a true gothic style staircase to an upper level. A variety of computers (apple mac) at your disposal, all wireless connected to a highspeed connection. Friends keep telling us this is one of the most beautiful houses of Leeuwarden. To be modest, it should have its place in the best hundred.

And... since 2011 you could combine your stay in Leeuwarden with our second house about 450 kms from Leeuwarden in the German mountains of the Harz. In the very centre of the high Harz region (Altenau) you can have the advantage of unspoilt mountain nature from a freestanding historic house with five bedrooms, two bathrooms, a garage, some sunny terraces and a nice garden. With a wealth of walking routes, starting at the front door, you'll be in no time walking in one of the most beautiful National Parks of Germany: the Nationalpark Harz.

So you can have the best of both worlds in one holiday: the vibrancy of the Netherlands and lovely mountain moments in the Harz.

Who we are

  1. I (Gjelt, 51) am a writer of literature (novels, poetry) and I do my share on writing travel books (including our region, so we should be able to give you first class tips). My wife, Willy (47), is artist, hence the atelier in our house. We have a set of four lively but well behaved and carefull children with ages 8, 11, 15 and 17. Three girls and a boy, staying young by competing with his sisters. We love all things marked 'art', be it joining a lecture, going to theatre, visiting musea and architecture and, for the sake of our kids, keeping fit on bikeroads, on sandy beaches and on dirt tracks in deep forests. We have been travelling quite a lot (mainly because of my travel guide work) and know how to deal with places and situations.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

You live amidst the lively wealth of a small city, with around the corner (examples): at 70 m a very 'arty' tapas-cuisine, at 80 m the excuberant atmosphere of a great Irish pub, at 100 m the network of quaint shopping streets and all in walking distance: theatre, cinema's, terraces etc. Still... it takes only fifteen minutes by bike or five minutes by car and you are surrounded with dreamy meadows, famous wetlands, wonderfull lakes, green recreational areas. Daytrips includes: basking in the sun on the vast beaches of five islands, exploring Amsterdam, enjoying state of the art amusement parks, visting national musea or... if your biking skills are good, trying to do the big tour: the Elfstedentocht with a bicycle (220 km) in ONE day. You should do it in one day, all the other days of your holiday are begin filled up easily. Try the very rare culture of Friesland (of which Leeuwarden is its capital), the Scotland of the U.K., the Bretagne of France.
