Our home

An easy and comfortable urban apartment in a monumental canal house. The canal is from 1400, the house from 1900 on fundaments from 1600. In 2000 the two of us have installed our apartment for 2 till 3 persons at the sunny and spacious 3d floor. Sorry, stairs, so less appropriate for persons carrying kids or pets. Great views on Old Amsterdam! The third floor (120 m²) has a spacious living with adjoining well filled kitchen corner, an adjoining study with extra 2p sofa/bed, a 2p bedroom, a bathroom (shower, full-sized bath, 2 taps), separate toilet, and a summer room leading to a green and floral terrace (20m², sunny from sunrise till late afternoon) offering full privacy and peace in the middle of an immensely popular part of Old Amsterdam. Comfortable for a couple + 1 child or friend.
Apart and independent from the main floor, there's a smaller fourth floor (60m2) with a small sundeck (8m2), everything fully functioning, but, as it is, for students (1 or 2), as we say "students of all ages", in its original state of 1979.
Wired and wireless internet at your service. In the basement you'll find our city bicycles. Our plants, books and CD's are our gems and we hope you take good care. Daily watering flora takes 20 minutes in summer. In short, the place likes guests who appreciate a vulnerable but spectacular home away from home. We guess, a delicate place for delicate people. Please - tell us what more you want to know?

Who we are

  1. We are an easy couple of two men in our early sixties, living here since 1979. Afficionados of Metropolitan Cool, we also like rural and remote areas and are easily fascinated by Shocking Suburban Real. Gert likes reading, writing, cooking and new clothes, Mattias likes reading, old songs, classic and world music, repairing and recycling goods and chattels. Our students say we belong to the book- and CD-generation. No webcams and no DVDs for us. We're both teaching at the University of Amsterdam: one is professor in history, anthropology and gay studies, the other is lecturer in the sociology of sexual education and civil society. We love the written word, plants, a simple life, the art of conversation and an ecologically balanced household. In full devotion for the huzzle and buzzle of our vulnerable part of town. Our latest investment in the uneven fight against waist and pollution is a solar panel system for the collection of energy out of the Blue. We're always in need of swapping suggestions for the months of January, July and August when students and courses are done. Without a car and a driver's license, we love bicycling and swimming in rural, suburban and urban destinations where-ever, whenever.
The sea and the sky are the only real obstacles that stop us. During our housing career before the internet we have participated in numerous happy swapping experiences. Now is our second time around on this hospitable website!

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

In the middle of Amsterdam and in the middle of Amsterdams Red Light District, overlooking the main canal, a pedestrian bridge and Amsterdams oldest church. Google the area with 'Amsterdam 1012ER' (our postal code) and check Google Maps Streetview. Walking distance is your main distance. Just around the corner is Amsterdam Central Railway Station with direct connections to all parts of the Netherlands, including the Amsterdam Airport (20 rail minutes), Paris, Berlin, Antwerp and Brussels. The central Dam Square, trams, buses, metro, ferries: close-to-you. Our neighbourhood is safe, residential and charming, draws tons of gay and straight visitors, offers everything residents and tourists need: a weekly farmers market, a weekly bric-a-brac market, a daily flower and vegetable stall, all kinds of larger and smaller shops, cinemas, the world at your feet. In between the crowded sidewalk cafees and coffeeshops you'll dicover more than enough subtle local places. In our grand-ma's cupboard you'll find all kind of maps of Amsterdam, the region and the Netherlands. Although the neigbourhood "never sleeps", the apartment and the bedrooms are relatively quiet places because of their architecture and installation. Urban sociologists call the area 'highly urbanized', we consider it a crossroad where the world becomes a village. No park at your feet but peaceful canals and small boats. More and more bicycles and pedestrians, less and less cars (banned in the evenings).
