Our home

Traditional, detached wooden house (17th C) in Nieuwendam near the centre of Amsterdam in a very green neighbourhood and with a large garden (300 m2). Just 10 minutes by bus, half hour by bike to city centre.

The house is a listed building and is located on a path away from the road (mega-peaceful!).
It has a lounge with piano and patio doors onto the garden, a bathroom (bath + separate shower) and a kitchen-diner with all facilities and galley-style dining table. Upstairs are three bedrooms, one with a double bed, a children's bedroom' with 2 singles and a third with one single bed and a small bed for a young child.

The garden is secluded and south/west facing with two patios (one by the water), grass, flowers and fruit trees. There are various playthings for children: a swing, rings, trampoline, paddling pool.

We have bicycles, kids and grownup's that you can use. A rowing boat is available and canoes can be hired nearby to explore 'Waterland'(see more below).

Property features

Who we are

  1. We are a family of six: Linda, Luuk and our children Zoe (15), Finn (12), Ivar (9) and Emma (6). Linda is British and a photographer and Luuk is Dutch and a researcher working on Alzheimer's disease. Linda is a keen gardener and Luuk likes to sit in the garden and enjoy it! We both like camping, hiking and the outdoors but the children seem to prefer more comfort so we find home-swapping a particularly nice way to travel with them.

We think we have a great house to offer as we live in a unique spot with all the interest of a city break together with the relaxation of a trip to the countryside.

We have family in Great Britain (Devon) and Norway (Drammen) and so these are always interesting destinations for us. Further, we like surprises, also at short notice (within Dutch school holidays), so make us an offer!

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

The house is located in historic Nieuwendam, an old fishing village but now part of Amsterdam. A short stroll takes you up onto the 'Dijk where there are lots more beautiful old, wooden buildings to enjoy and the Cafe Het Sluisje, for a local beer on tap. The neighbourhood still retains its villagey feel.

However, Amsterdam city centre with all its culture and museums is only 10 minutes away by bus or car or 20 minutes by bicycle and free ferry (much more fun!).

A large shopping centre (Buikslotermeerplein) is within 5 minutes walking distance. Further shops such as a baker, or chinese takeaway are even closer.

Also not unimportant if you come with a car: parking is free in our neighbourhood.

A cycle/skate or short drive away is Waterland, a water-rich rural area to the north of Amsterdam: where there is countryside and dozens of famous towns and villages to explore: such as Edam, Volendam, Marken, Broek in Waterland and Monnickendam.
