Who we are

  1. I am a retired owner of an executive training and development firm which served corporate clients throughout the U.S.and Canada for over 25 years. I am a "reformed academic" (Ph.D. in Speech Communication and American Studies) who ended up in the private sector right out of graduate school and never made it back to academia.

My wife, Frona, is a self-described "recovering attorney." After practicing law in the private sector, she taught at Indiana University where she was a professor of Business Law and Ethics in the Kelley School of Business. She is now happy to join me in retirement. Frona's first overseas experience was studying at St. Hilda's at Oxford as an undergraduate where she fell in love with England and British ales. In our 40+ years of marriage, we have traveled extensively abroad and had the opportunity to live for extended periods in Germany (Hanover), Croatia (Zagreb) and The Netherlands (Maastricht).

We have two children. Our daughter, Alison, husband Alex, grandson, Sam & granddaughter, Anita, live in Michigan. She is an Assistant Prof of English at Oakland University and Alex is a professor of political science at Detroit Mercy.

Our son, Aaron, is a Professor of ESL and Spanish at Valencia College in Orlando, FL. He and his wife, Liz, recently presented us with our third grandchild, Maya. Completing the family unit is our world traveler toy Pom, Peanut, affectionately known as "The Nut."

In addition to our initial exchange in Manhattan, blocks from Carnegie Hall, we have also completed successful exchanges in Berlin, New York City, Rome, Lake Tahoe and Sardinia, with an additional exchange planned in the future for Tuscany. Home for Exchange has been a great site for us and we welcome any inquiries anyone might have.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Condo Cristina # 4 is located in the heart of Playa del Carmen, just three blocks from the two most popular beaches in Playa and one block off famous pedestrian only Fifth Ave., or Avenida Quinta. Kool is an upscale beach club at Mamitas Beach (the beach is public) where a couple can rent lounge chairs and an umbrella for about $12 USD for the day. Mamitas Beach club next door is similar. Both beach clubs have pools, showers, bathrooms, lockers, changing rooms, full bars and restaurants, as well as massage tables. Waiters will bring drinks or food right to your beach chairs. Fishing boats, sailboats and parasailing are readily available for hire on site.

Locals refer to our area of Playa as "Little Italy" because of the wealth of Italian restaurants and coffee shops and the many Italians who live here. Having said that, in addition to excellent Italian restaurants, around the corner on 5th, you can find Sushi, Moroccan, Mexican, Seafood, Spanish tapas, Argentine parillas, as well as international places like Starbucks and Haagan-Dazs. Ah Cacao, one block away on 5th, has the best chocolate in all of Playa and maybe in all of Mexico. Their spicy chocolate ice cream (made with REAL chocolate) is not to be missed. Additionally, a Japanese restaurant, Nikkori, is right next door to our building.

In short, you have everything you need within walking distance and taxis are cheap if you want to explore outside the immediate area. Cozumel is a short 45 minute ferry ride away. The ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum are about an hour away, as are the ruins at Coba. Chitzen-Itza is about three hours. If you prefer a tour, we recommend Caribe Viaggi, about one block away on 5th Ave and 32nd St. They speak Spanish, Italian and English (at least.)
