Our home

Latvia offers the perfect mix of beautiful, unspoilt nature with secluded beaches, mystical forrests and clean, fresh lakes on the one side and an exciting cultural heritage city on the other.

If you exchange with us, you certainly get the best of both - and a little more. The house we offer here is our home away from home and a place to simply be happy in.

A spacious living room with access to a big, sunny terrace is the center of the flat. It has two big sleeping-rooms. A third room serves as a study, but has a fold out couch in it, which can serve as a bed for one or two more people. We also offer an additional baby cod.
Obviously the place has a WiFi-connection for you to use.

The ktichen has all you could possibly ask for, so you can prepare your own meals at home... but when visiting Latvia, you should not miss out on all the new creative and still affordable restaurants, which have opened in Riga during the last few years.
Also, in summer, a BBQ in the garden is a real Latvian thing to do.

The garden anyway is well worth mentioning: Kris' parents live upstairs in the house we offer here and take great pride in their huge garden, which is a paradise for young and old. Not only does it offer a lot of space to simply relax and read a book, but Kris' mom also grows a huge amount of delicous fruits and vegetables here, which you are free to enjoy during your stay, if you pick the right season.
In winter, again, benefit of the traditionally fermented goodies from the garden, made to last for the cold season. Children love the garden any time of the year, be it to hide in there, to discover nature or to build a snowman.

On the ground is a secluded parking spot behind closed gates.

Obviously there is bedlinen and towels as well as a washing machine, so that you can travel with light luggage. Bring empty suitcases, though: Riga is great for shopping.

We are normally here in our second home for several weeks every summer and a few weeks throughout the year, but are quite flexible. We do rent out the place on airbnb, though, when we are not around, which means it may be good to get in touch early.

See our b&b-advertisement for more information and references: https://www.airbnb.de/rooms/5285953
Here you can also find the other appartment, which is in the neighboring house. It used to be the workshop, which Kris then slowly transferred into a nice holiday home. The other place has a typical, traditional Latvian sauna, which you are very welcome to use, if it is not rented out. Also, if available, you could also exchange with us for the sauna-house, which you find under this link: https://www.airbnb.de/rooms/5285934

Who we are

  1. We are a Latvian-German couple with two little boys (*2006 and *2009). Kris is a carpenter, who has also renovated this apartment with a lot of love to the detail. Rebecca works as a diplomat for the German Foreign Ministry. At the moment we are posted to Prague and are hoping to explore a little more of Europe before we maybe get sent to some other continent for the next assignment.
Should you fancy a visit to this beautiful place, please tell us and we can discuss this option too. We live in a spacious, central apartment in an Art Noveau building and are sure you will like it.

We have always been hosting people through couchsurfing or airbnb and now also found home exchange as a great method to share our beloved space with great people and get to see other parts of the world in exchange. Having two kids, we would love to stay at a family home and prefer exchanges with people who have kids in the age of ours.

Our children love swimming, so a pool or the seaside close by would be perfect. Rebecca loves horseriding and would thus also be delighted to take care of your horses, if needed. There is a cat in Marupe, Cher, who lives with Kris' parents. You thus will not have to worry about her. However, taking care of your animals in general is not a problem for us.

Having two kids in school age, we always depend on the school vacation. However, non-simultaneous is no problem. Just get in touch with your suggestions - we are looking forward to hearing from you.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Our home away from home is situated in Marupe, a small town just bordering Riga. The distance from us to the center of exciting and historical Riga is only 8 km, easy by public transport (busses leave right in front of the house), car or bike. Also a taxi-ride will only cost you between 6 and 8 Euros.

Marupe is a calm place with many family houses and gardens. There is a big supermarket about 1km down the road, as well as several beauty salons, doctors and other useful places. Also there are a few restaurants near bye.

Marupe is a very green place and offers great opportunities for nice walks in the bordering forest. Up the road from us, there is also a huge riding stable - horse-lovers should bring their riding gear. (http://horseriding.lv/lv/stables/tirainesstalli)

Plenty of excursions are possible from here: How about a day at the seaside? You can chose between lively Jurmala with it's beach promenade and several summer festivals (http://www.latvia.travel/de/city/jurmala-8) or a completely secluded beach behind some birch tree groves, just a few kilometers further.

But Latvia has more to offer! Every summer we do a 3-4-day canoeing-trip with our children and a tent, which can easily be done meeting hardly any human soul, if this is what you are after. Cyclists will love the many newly built cycling paths and the fact that most of Latvia is completely flat.
Countryside tourism has also picked up in recent years, which means you can find everything from farms offering local, organic products to renovated old manor houses offering you five-course dinners in an almost royal surrounding.

Well, and then there is obviously Riga, which with its 800 years of history is certainly worth more than just a short visit. (http://www.latvia.travel/en/article/riga-and-surroundings).
Wander the little alleys of Riga's Old Town or be at awe in the face of this city's Art Noveau architecture. Visit the many museums and loose yourself in Europe's biggest roofed market halls, where farmers from the whole country sell their products all year round.
Then there is also the modern Riga: Latvian designers sell clothes, jewelery and home appliances for reasonable prices and make shopping a unique experience. All the major brands are also available and small cafés offer you a place to rest when you are tired from all the spending.

Riga's nightlife is wild...get ready for live-music, fine dining, beer-pubs but also modern clubs and world-renowned DJs.

Plenty to do - and we as well as Kris' parents, who live at the house, are happy to provide you with ideas.
