Our home

This is a fully modernised 15 century stone house in the heart of the medieval quarter of the walled Etruscan town of Tarquinia. The stone walls and tiled floors surrounding a traditional fireplace gives the full flavour of Italian living in comfort. A marble staircase leads up to the first floor where the two spacious bedrooms are found. Each has a modern en-suite with shower. The third floor is open plan with a view over the terracotta roof-tops and towers of the town. The chestnut beams and panels of the ceiling give the full Italian effect and add richness and colour to this lovely, delicately crafted home. We are found on a narrow ancient street between two lovely sunny piazzas where locals gather to exchange greetings. At one end is the Etruscan museum that once housed the arch-bishop of Viterbo (a rival to the pope), whilst at the other end is the Duomo, where major religious festivals are held almost weekly.

Who we are

  1. I am a full time professor at a University in England who is approaching retirement. My wife has recently retired as executive director of Victim Support for Hampshire. Our main home is in Romsey, England but we have owned this lovely Italian home for about 4 years with the help and support of my Italian family connections. We are non-smokers, we have no pets, and we enjoy the outdoors. We are both tidy, responsible and easy to get along with. We are delighted and proud of this classical home in Italy where we will one day retire to. As we only enjoy it during vacation, we are open to exchanges over much of the year.

Your neighbourhood

Tarqinia is situated in the heart of the Etruscan (pre-Roman) civilisation overlooking the fertile Marta valley where vineyards, cornfields and clusters of shepards cottages abound. The town looks across to the Tyrrenean Sea and the setting sun in the west, to the north lies Tuscany and the Marremma where wild boar, horses and deer roam. To the east are the volcanic lakes of Bracciano and Bolsena where for $10 one can still enjoy the finest Italian food at a lakeside table. Rome is 40 minutes away to the south by train and is a must. The town is a jewel of preservation and has recently earned the UNESCO World Heritage designation.
