Our home

Casa Castello is a classic Tuscan country house. Its original stone work dates back to the 13th century when it was the servants quarters for the nearby Castel San Niccolo. It has since been modernised and now has 3 bedrooms a fully equipped kitchen, and a huge outdoor terrace overlooking the nearby town of Strada in Casentino & the Solano River. Typical of a Tuscan villa it has terracotta floors, shutters on all windows and an open fire in the kitchen. There are sweeping panoramic views from every room in the house & total privacy on extensive grounds. Upstairs are two double (or twin) bedrooms, downstairs is another double or twin bedroom, dining room with seating for 10, bathroom & laundry & fully equipped kitchen. The path at the front gate takes you for a short walk uphill to the castle & borgo overlooking the town or downhill to the town & shops & other facilities. The house is situated on the side of a hill (which is why it has spectacular views) and has pedestrian access only (unless you are in a small 4WD) from street level. You will require a reasonable level of physical fitness to walk in & out. If you aren't fit when you arrive, you will be when you leave!

Who we are

  1. I am an Australian artist who has lived & worked in Tuscany & I am planning to eventually live half of the year in Australia enjoying the summers there and then retreat to Italy for another 6 months of summer. The house is a second residence so is available year round for swaps as I still live and work in Melbourne, Australia. As an artist I have a particular interest in history & culture of many regions of the world as well as a professional interest in photography, textiles & ceramics so anywhere that involves any or all of these is always somewhere I would consider visiting. I hope to return to Mexico, Cuba, Portugal, Morocco & the Caribbean and am yet to visit Sicily, Naples, Uzbekistan, India, New Orleans & North Africa. Music is another passion so there are many destinations on my list where I would like to go to check out the local music scene. I have a number of equally adventurous friends who I hope will accompany on my journeys.

Your neighbourhood

The Casentino district of Tuscany is the forest district famous for walking tracks, porcini mushrooms & wild boar. Strada in Casentino is 55kms east of Florence and easily reached by road. Regular bus services run from central Florence bus station on the Bibbiena or Poppi routes. Poppi is a delightful medieval town with cloistered walkways, the castle of Count Guido Guidi open to the public and sweeping panoramic views. Perched on the hillside is a 9 hole golf course overlooking the Arno valley as it flows to Florence. A little further south is Arezzo, immortalized in the film "Life is Beautiful" and famous for its monthly outdoor street antiques market. Easy driving distance are the Franciscan La Verna monastery & Camaldoli and the renowned Piero della Francesca trail tracking the artists masterpieces in Arezzo, Sansepolcro & Monterchi. The local cuisine has specialties of game such as wild boar, hare & duck and a working water powered flour mill a few kilometres down the road provides flour & chestnut flour for local pasta & sweets.
