Gubbio was an important centre for the Umbrians, as is demonstrated by the Eugubine Tablets (3rd - 1st century B.C.), the most remarkable epigraphic heirloom of pre-Roman Italy. They consist of seven bronze tablets which offer ritual directions for particular ceremonies, and also give indications as to the organization of the Eugubine city-state.
A lot of craft activities like ceramics, wood and wrought ironwork, hold a particularly prominent position, as well as the wholesome cuisine that offers typical local products: the "crescia" (an Easter ceesecake), several local wines from the hilly regions and mainly black and white rare truffles.
You can attend the traditional contest called "The Crossbow Festival" - whit arbalesters, dressed in typical period costumes - meet every year (the last sunday in May) in the striking setting of Piazza Grande.
On the eve of the feast of St.Ubaldo (the patron of Gubbio) takes place the "Race of the Ceri" (May 15th), an event that envolve all the people in following the "ceraioli" (who carry on their shoulders these tall, wooden structures named "Ceri") running through the streets of the town up to the Basilica of Sant'Ubaldo. The spectacular ritual of the raising of the Ceri go whit the celebration of the patron Saint.
