Our home

Our beloved home from home is in a tiny rural Tuscan village nestling in the mountains of the Garfagnana above Gallicano. The house is on the edge of the village and the large garden has an uninterrupted panorama over a small vineyard to the mountains beyond. The terrace is a wonderfully peaceful place to sip a glass of wine and watch the golden eagles wheeling overhead. We have lovingly renovated our home over the years to provide modern fittings but in a rustic and traditional setting. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. Although this is "a second home" you will still find all the paraphenalia of our daily life when we are in Italy! The ground floor has the main sitting room with flat screen tv and dvd player, winter sitting room and dining area which seats 8, kitchen, master bedroom with kingsize bed and one of the bathrooms. A door from the kitchen opens onto the steps down to the terrace and garden. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms, a third sitting room, bathroom with walk-in shower and a tiny balcony. In the cellar you will find the pool table, the washing machine and all our garden furniture if it's not already outside! Please be aware that there are steps and stairs everywhere in this house so it is not suitable for children and we would not be looking for a swap with a young family. We're sorry we can't offer you a car at this time but one IS essential.

Who we are

  1. We, Fred and Siobhan, are in our 60's, both professional and recently retired from our own business in England. We are keen travellers and love walking and exploring new places, new foods and new cultures; Fred fly fishes and Siobhan is a scuba diver. Our "kids" are in their 30's and firmly based in Yorkshire, one is a science teacher and the other a dry stone waller. We have been house swapping for eight years now and delight in the opportunity it gives us to visit new countries. We're very open to non-simultaneous exchange as this would give us (and you) maximum flexibility and maybe even a chance to meet. As we have no time restrictions we don't mind what time of year we travel whereas you may feel that June to September is the very best time to visit Italy. We're especially looking for exchanges in the countryside or by the beach.

Your neighbourhood

Tuscan hilltop villages are built in higgeldy-piggeldy fashion with houses clambering up the hillside on top of each other to the church. This village is no exception but unusually you are able to park right in front of our house in a little piazza. Cardoso has two lively bars with their own tiny shops and one does take away pizza. During the summer the village comes alive with a slow food festival, art exhibition, football tournament and a multitude of festas held at the bar or in various piazzas but at all times you will receive a warm welcome from the villagers. There is excellent walking in the mountains around - many walks starting from Cardoso itself - and only slightly further afield are the magnificent marble mines where Michelangelo found the stone for his wonderful statues; the Grotto del Vento, a stunning cave system; the ancient town of Barga; the beautiful walled city of Lucca and the buzzing seaside resorts of Viareggio and Torre del Lago, home of Puccini. Easily within reach for a day trip are wonderful Florence, Pisa, Livorno and the Cinque Terre. Eating out in this region is always a gastronomic delight and you will find bill posters of all our favourite haunts pinned up on a kitchen cupboard!
