Our home

PLEASE NOTE: As we are moving to Canberra, Australia sometime in 2014, we are only interested in an exchange with Canberra, but our home is also available for holiday rentals so if the house and Killarney interest you, you can view rates and book your vacation on www.scartleahouse.com.

Our newly built house, 5 minutes drive from Killarney town, is just three years old and has been finished to a very high standard. It is bright and warm and, despite being a large house, retains a cosy atmosphere. Although it is new and quite modern, the house has a country classic look that makes it very comfortable. On offer to our guests are: an open plan kitchen/dining room with everything for the amateur chef, a large high ceilinged living/play room with an LCD TV, DVD player and Wii and a gas stove to cosy up the evenings. The sofa in this room converts into a double bed if necessary. There is also a spacious laundry room and a study to the side of the kitchen. On the other side of the large entrance hall, is the sitting room with a HD projector and screen for our home theatre along with an open fireplace. All these rooms also have a built-in central music system.

There is a double bedroom downstairs along with a shower/WC.
Upstairs are the master bedroom (ensuite with a separate shower and spa bath), a child’s bedroom with single child’s bed and the baby’s room which has a cot and a double sofa bed. There is also a family bathroom with separate bath and shower.

We have a large, well established garden behind the house with many beautiful birch and willow trees, swings and slide set,a trampoline, a playhouse, a ‘fairy ring’ and a fire pit good for a bonfire as well as a big Australian style Barbeque.

The house is in the countryside but we have great neighbours on either side who will take care of you should you need help with anything.

Property features

Who we are

  1. We are a young family, Fiona (Irish), Rod (Australian) and two well behaved little girls – Sophie(6) and Emma(2).

We are very clean, tidy and reliable. We have already completed 5 successful exchanges and will respect your home and leave it as we find it.

We are coming to Canberra for work and will be staying a year or more starting sometime between February and September 2014 so would ideally be exchanging for a year but will certainly consider a few months at a time if not possible

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

The house is just minutes from Killarney National Park, known worldwide for the beauty of its lakes and mountains, with over 10,000 hectares full of interesting walks, cycles, hill walks etc. as well horse riding, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, photography and wildlife spotting (e.g. wild deer and eagles). For the less active visitor, the area can also be seen by horse and cart, car and tour boats.

Killarney is great for golf with some of the best courses in the country (the Irish Open was held here the last few years).

Within 5 minutes drive of our house you will find Muckross Abbey, an ancient ruin overlooking the lake, and Muckross House, built for Queen Victoria with its extensive gardens. Not far from here is Torc Mountain with its beautiful waterfall. Ten minutes from us is Ross Island with a medieval castle and its 17th century monastery on Inisfallen Island across the lake, along with Europe’s oldest copper mines all ready to explore on the beautiful peninsula. All of these are set in spectacular settings, fantastic in every season.
There is a traditional farm with farmhouses and animals, a petting farm and a wildlife park all nearby.

Killarney is a lively little town which is the beginning and end of the famous Ring of Kerry loop with beautiful towns and spectacular scenery along with historical monuments and great activities including surfing and horse riding on the gorgeous sandy beaches.

(There is so much to explore in this area, we will just stick to what is within a few minutes from our house).

Tourists have flocked to Killarney for centuries on account of the amazing nature and, accordingly, the town has a huge range of bars, cafes, restaurants and hotels offering fine dining, drink and entertainment. For the wet weather there are cosy pubs with great music, a 6 screen cinema, good shopping and many hotel spas and leisure centres open to non-residents. For the kids, there is a lovely indoor playground. The INEC also hosts well known artists for music, comedy and theatre.

Whether you are coming for activity, music and “craic”(Irish for fun, to be found in pubs year round), relaxation, history or nature, Killarney and our beautiful home will not disappoint you. Fiona’s Dad lives nearby and can also act as tour guide while you are here should you wish.
