Our home

*** At the northern tip of Ireland, the house is an ideal base for visiting Donegal and Northern Ireland. "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" was filmed here in 2016.

*** Donegal is the "coolest place on the planet in 2017" according to National Geographic Traveller magazine.

*** Only 35km from Derry (Northern Ireland). First "UK City of Culture" in 2013. No 4 on Lonely Planet's "Top Places to Visit in the World" list in 2012.

Our house is a large 220 m2 well-appointed 'New Tudor' style dormer bungalow built in 1989, which can accommodate 6 people. It is a deceptively large house with 13 rooms. Downstairs contains an entrance hall, a sitting room/lounge with dining area, a family living room with dining area, a kitchen with breakfast bar, a laundry room/store, a teenage games room/study, a family bathroom with shower, bath and bidet, and a separate toilet / WC. Upstairs you will find another bathroom with a shower, WC and basin, a children's play room and three double bedrooms with Queen size beds, each bedroom also has its own washbasin.

The property is located on a site of 0.4 hectares and is surrounded by mature shrubs and trees. It is a solid house, built with bricks, which leaves it warm in winter and cool in summer. There are three lawns, two to the front and one to the rear. There is a children's play area with a trampoline, slide and swings; a wooden summerhouse; a herb garden, a vegetable patch; a greenhouse with tomatoes (pick your own) and a garage.

It is suitable for families with children and teenagers, as there are two playrooms and plenty of toys / games for children between 6-15 years. There is plenty of space for each person to do their own thing if they wish. There are four TVs (two smart incl. Netflix), blu-ray player, two Android TV Boxes (Kodi / IPTV / Roku). There is good reliable Wifi with an average speed of 25-30 mb/sec. There is some gym equipment in our garage.

Who we are

  1. An Irish family of four who wish to experience the American lifestye in summer 2018.

Hello from Ireland ... and thanks for clicking on our exchange offer.

We normally prefer to exchange with other families where there are children, but this is not set in stone. We would ideally like a family where there is a boy between 12 and 16 and a girl between 6 and 14. We would like an exchange with 'non-smokers'.The husband works as a guidance counselor, the wife works as a manager of a parenting organization. We have had more than 20 wonderful house exchanges since 1996 with several other exchange organizations. We are very respectful of other people's property and privacy and we expect the same from our guests. We will look after your home with the utmost care.

We have 2 children, a boy Cillian [pronounced kill-e-ann] born in 2002 and a daughter Anna born in 2006. We have a dog, Coco (born in July 2013), but she will usually go to a kennel unless you really want to look after her. If you have pets, we are very happy to take care of them while we are in your home.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Donegal is at the northern end of the island of Ireland - we are in Southern Ireland (a.k.a. Eire / Republic of Ireland) although we are further north than Northern Ireland!!! The Giant's Causeway and the major "Game of Thrones" sites are less than an hour away by ferry. Star Wars - The Last Dedi was filmed locally at Malin Head in Summer 2016.

We live in a very quiet and relaxing neighborhood on a peninsula called Inishowen in green and wild Donegal. The house is 1km from the Atlantic Ocean and 5km from a beautiful sandy and safe beach. On the Inishowen Peninsula you can enjoy the starting point for the Wild Atlantic Way, the longest coastal scenic drive in the world - while on the peninsula itself you can hike or hill climb, swim in the sea, go sailing, deep sea fishing and freshwater fishing, go horse riding (1km), surfing, hill and rock climbing, cycling, painting and golf. You might even see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) when you are here.

We are less than 1km from a village called Malin, where there is a hotel, two traditional Irish pubs, a fast-food restaurant, a cafe, a supermarket, a post office, a hairdresser, a beautician and a butcher. We are 4km from a small town called Carndonagh with all the facilities you will need including ATMs, banks, large supermarkets, bars, restaurants and a range of takeout options such as Indian, Chinese, pizzas, fish 'n' chips, etc.

The Nearest City
The historic walled city of Derry / Londonderry (pop. 130,000) is only 35 km from us, across the border in Northern Ireland. This ancient fortified city has a lot to offer, including department stores, hypermarkets, museums, culture, history, pubs, discos, concert halls, theatre, cinema and restaurants. It was chosen as the first "UK City of Culture" in 2013. Derry was also ranked at number four in Lonely Planet's list of the top places to visit in the world in 2012. City of Derry Airport (LDE) has daily flights to several UK cities such as London, Liverpool and Glasgow.

Nearest International Airport: Belfast International (2 hours drive)
The Titanic Centre in Belfast would be worth a stopover if flying into Belfast, it was named best tourist attraction in the world at the World Travel Awards in 2016 - ahead of Machu Picchu, the Taj Mahal and the Egyptian Pyramids! It is now officially the most visited tourist attraction in the world with 5,000 visitors a day - more than the Eiffel Tower or the Empire State Building.

Other airports: Belfast City (2.5 hours), Dublin (4 hours)

Golf
The Inishowen Peninsula is a real paradise for golfers, with five courses within 20 km of our house. This area was chosen as the European Golf Destination of the Year in 2011. The nearest golf course is Ballyliffin (a short 10 minutes’ drive), it is a 36-hole championship course, considered the best golf club in the world outside of the United States in 2014 by Golf Odyssey. It will host the Irish Open in 2018. The website is www.ballyliffingolfclub.com
