Our home

Killaloe is a small town, more typical of an Ireland that is long past. It is popular with French fishermen because it is situated on the river Shannon, where it enters Lough Derg. It is a great base for walking, touring, boating, traditional Irish music and pubs. The town has provided a number of Irish champion traditional musicians. One of them, Seamus Connolly, is currently listed as one of the hundred most influential Irishmen living in America. Even though the population is little over 1,000 two locals would be well known to French rugby followers. Keith Wood was captain of the Irish rugby team, and lives just 20 metres from the apartment. Anthony Foley also played rugby for Ireland, and his father Brendan was a member of the Munster team that defeated the all blacks in 1976, the only Irish team to do so. The apartment is a new build, with a view of the river and hills at the rear. It comprises a kitchen living area, a large bedroom, a large bathroom, and a smaller bedroom with bunk beds. There is separate entrance from the street. Limerick, some 20 kilometres away is the nearest large town. In recent years Ballina, a village of some 200 people twenty years ago, at the other side of the bridge from killaloe, has expanded to a town with a population in excess of 2000. The area is now frequently referred to the twin towns of Killaloe/Ballina with a combined population in the region of 3000. Killaloe was capital of Ireland at the end of the first millenium, because Brian Boru, the high king of Ireland, resided there. He was responsible for driving the vikings from Ireland, but died himself, in the battle of Clontarf. Killaloe is a heritage town.

Who we are

  1. We are a retired couple. We studied Latin and Classical Greek at school, but no modern European languages. In our retirement we have decided to study French as a hobby, and have completed the Delf A1 and A2 courses. We are currently preparing for the B1 module. Our interest in France is to absorb the language and culture. We are flexible in dates, but would ideally like to spend periods of up to one month, at any one time, in France or French speaking parts of Belgium or Switzerland. While a car is essential in a low population area like the West of Ireland, we will not need a car as we would be too nervous to drive on the continent. The current car we provide is a 2012 Focus Titanium with a manual gearbox. The apartment is not suitable for pets.
