Who we are

  1. We are a family of four, John (51), Tanya (43), Evan (14) and Hazel (11).
John worked as a theatrical production manager for many years and currently works in community development, Tanya is a mother, artist and jewellery designer, our two children are mature for their years and very well behaved. We love to travel as a family and enjoy experiencing the way of life in other countries. This is our second exchange and having had such a good experience in 2011 we are excited at the prospect of sharing our comfortable family home with other people interested in exploring this wonderful region of Ireland.

Your neighbourhood

We live in the small town of Gort and within five minutes walk you will find restaurants, cafés, pubs, local shops and supermarkets to suit all tastes.1km away is Coole Park with its wonderful forest walks, tea room, picnic area and lake views. Gort is situated on the edge of the Burren National Park with its spectacular landscape, beautiful flora & fauna, megalithic tombs and monuments, many of which are older than Egypt's pyramids.
South Galway and County Clare is world famous for its scenery, including the Cliffs of Moher and Ailwee and Doolin Caves as well as one of Europe’s best surfing beaches at Lahinch. For children Bunratty Folk Village and Craggaunowen Bronze Age village are a real treat. There are many nearby fishing villages such as Kinvarra or Ballyvaughan or go slightly further afield and take a ferry trip from Doolin to the Aran Islands.
Once you have enjoyed a full day outside there is nothing better than a quality pint of Guinness and some live traditional music available in many of the local pubs.
Galway City is accessible by car (30 mins.), bus or train from Gort. Galway is young, cosmopolitan; and full of life, art, music, theatre, history and culture. Galway is of course the gateway to the extraordinary scenery and unique Irish culture of Connemara.
For those who don't mind driving slightly further, it is possible to visit virtually any part of Ireland using our home as a base. Dublin, Cork, Sligo, Kerry and Killarney are all within two to three hours drive from our front door.
Ireland is unique and wonderful; you can enjoy all of it’s charms from our home.
