The Connemara / Clonbur area:

Crucan Rua is an ideal base for Fishing and Hill walking, being situated half way up Mount Gable overlooking Lough Corrib. The climb to the top of Mount Gable takes approximately an hour, but you are well rewarded with some of the best views in the country.

Not only Lake Corrib provides plenty of opportunities for the fishing and boating enthusiast -the whole area is a true angler's paradise, with Lough Mask, Lough Nafooey, Killary Harbour and many streams as well as river Finney and canal joining Mask and Corrib nearby. There are excellent opportunities to catch brown trout with the odd chance for a Salmon. Trout Fishing is free, a salmon licence can be purchased in the local villages.

Other watersports include kayaking, canoeing, sailing and swimming, which is safely possible from the nearby Outdoor Education Centre.

A variety of marked walks have been established in the Clonbur and Cong areas. Detailed maps are available in the cottage.
Another great way to experience our lovely landscape is by bicycle! Bicycles can be hired in the village of Clonbur.

There are several excellent golf courses within a 30 minute drive, including Ashford Castle, Ballinrobe, Claremorris, Tuam and in Galway. Mini Golf can be played in the village of Cong.

The Cong area is a low-lying area with some spectacular karst development and where all of the drainage of the Lough Mask catchment discharges via underground routes. Many caves are to be viewed and include Kellys Cave, BallyMcClancy Cave, the Pigeon Hole and the Dry Canal.

If you just come here to relax you have picked the perfect location! Surrounded by the most beautiful lakes and rivers this is an oasis of calm and tranquility in one of the most scenic and picturesque parts of Ireland.

Loughs Corrib and Mask have earned international acclaim from discriminating anglers and Clonbur is centrally located for both lakes. Another place of unique beauty is Lough Coolin, a small lake set like a glittering gem in the foothills of Mount Gable, just 3 miles from Clonbur. For the more adventurous, Mount Gable is an easy climb of about one hour's duration. The effort is worthwhile because the views of Lough Corrib, stretching away to the south, Lough Mask to the north and the Connemara mountains to the west, are spectacular and breathtaking.

Alternatively, a short drive towards Cong and a turn right will bring you to the famous Pigeon Hole, the site where 66 steps in a huge cleft in the limestone floor of the Ashford Castle woods lead to a vast underwater cavern. This contains one of the many underground streams that flow from Lough Mask to Lough Corrib.
