Our home

Curris Cottage is located 15 minutes west of Killybegs, Ireland's largest fishing port. It sits on Teelin Bay oppossite Slieve League on the Wild Atlantic Way, with it's sea cliffs (highest in Europe at just over 600 metres/1972 feet). Slieve League is also the geographic end of the Appalachian Way, although a long way from the USA!

The house is entirely on one level, with just one step at the back. There is a large shower in the bathroom and a smaller shower in the ensuite bedroom. There is a large, bright, well-equipped kitchen/dining room and a comfortable sitting room with a wood-burning stove and satellite TV. private parking for several cars.

Who we are

  1. We are retired with 2 adult children. We moved last year to Calverstown in County Kildare, 25 miles (40 kilometres) south of Dublin, but that's not our "Exchange" home.

  2. Curris Cottage is in South West Co. Donegal. It is our second home. Maeve's mother grew up outside Kilcar (3Km West), in Muckross and her father lived in Carrick (3Km East). His family was very musical with dancers, fiddlers and singers. This rich tradition continues down the generations! We both play and sing and it's good to know that all musicians & singers are welcome in the local pubs.

    Irish is spoken by many locals and we use our Irish when we're in situ. A greeting in Irish will be warmly accepted. Such as: Hello = Dia dhuit (gee-a gitch);
    Thank you = Go raibh maith agat (gurro my aguth).

  3. We love music. We both sing a little and play a little (Piano, guitar, ukulele and violin ... sort of! ). Maeve paints and we like to visit galleries when we travel to cities. We particularly like the 'Impressionists' such as Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir, Picasso etc.
    Currently we're interested in Port Richie / Hudson Florida. We have a much-loved relation living near there. We don't want to burden him or his wife with looking after us for 3 weeks!

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

This entire area is a walker's paradise and there is lots of traditional music available in the wonderful warm local pubs (Carrick and Kilcar, 3 Kilometres either side of our home). The local people are very welcoming, so if you play an instrument or sing, you will be very welcome.

There are many good beaches within a few minutes drive of Curris Cottage and the nearest beach is just a 15 minute walk to a lovely safe enclosed beach. There's lots of fishing too: off the shore, in the rivers, or from a boat at sea. Boats can be hired in Teelin or Killybegs for a great day out.

There is a great selection of local restaurants and coffee shops, places to visit and things to do in the area. We have file of information in the sitting room for our guests!! You! There's also a Tourist information office in Killybegs and also in Donegal Town (45 minutes away)

West Donegal is a place of great natural beauty and wonderful views. The Wild Atlantic Way runs through the area from Killybegs to Muckross Head to the wonderful Slieve League.

it's just a 15 minute drive to Glencolumcille where in Oideas gael, you can take courses in Irish language or music or Flora & fauna of West Donegal, or visit the Folk village or pubs with traditional music every night during the Summer.

We hope you enjoy your stay.
