Our home

Our house is located in a quiet end of road estate with a large south facing back garden which is not overlooked as there is farmland behind the house. The garden catches the evening and afternoon sun which can be enjoyed on our large patio area. We have plenty of garden furniture and a gas burning BBQ for those nice outdoor evenings.

Our bright open plan kitchen and dining area was extended in 2014 and well equipped with gas hob, electric oven, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. The dining area can seat up to 6. The open plan area also includes a recreation area with a sofa and 40" Smart TV and Xbox. The front room has a large sofa, a 40 inch HD flat screen tv, cable, and high speed wi-fi (throughout house) as well as our book collection! Downstairs also includes a WC.

Upstairs has 4 bedrooms, one of which is currently home to another flat screen tv and lounge space but if required we can arrange for a single bed to be put in. The master bedroom has a super kingsize oak bed, walk-in wardrobe, and ensuite with electric shower. The second master has a double that can be made into two singles, en suite with walk in power shower and plenty of wardrobe and storage space. The third bedroom is set up for our baby so has a cot, changing table, rocking chair etc. The main bathroom with bathtub is also located upstairs.

We have a 4 year old cat who will obviously be housed elsewhere during your stay but this may mean that our house would not be suitable for those highly sensitive to cats.

We have recently welcomed our first little bundle of joy who is currently 9 months old so the house is ideally set up for those with young children with a cot/changing facilities in one of the rooms and the potential to turn the second master into two single beds. Plenty of toys and playing areas downstairs as well as high chairs, strollers and all the usual things that come with babies!!

Who we are

  1. We are a young married couple in our mid 30’s both working full time, I in one of Dublin’s University’s and my husband Dave in a financial company. We both love travelling and have travelled extensively in Europe and the US. We took 6 months off in 2007 to see a bit more of the world, travelling to Peru, Chile, Australia, New Zealand and Cambodia which was the experience of a lifetime. My mother swapped her house (in Lucan just five minutes away) in 2010 and we travelled over with her for part of her stay and so began our interest in house swapping. In 2012 we swapped our own home with a family in the South of France (see recommendation)and 2013 with a couple in Barcelona and 2014 with a couple from Canada (see all our recommendations. In 2015 we took a break as we welcomed our first child a little boy in Sepetember 2015.

As mentioned, we would ideally like to swap with a family with young children that would be set up with cots etc as this would save us having to bring our own.

A car is not necessary for Dublin city but if you are exploring further afield and feel comfortable driving a manual car on the ‘wrong’ side of the road it may be possible to include our car as part of the swap.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Celbridge is a suburb of Dublin city and is perfectly located within easy reach of the city centre but also the surrounding areas of Kildare, Meath and Wicklow.

Celbridge is 30 minutes drive/ 20 kilometres from Dublin city centre which is easily accessible by car, public bus or train services. In addition, Celbridge is located just off the main motorway to the West of Ireland (Galway – 2 hours, Mayo - 3 hours) and is minutes from the intersection of several other major motorways linking Dublin to the south (Kilkenny – 1.5 hours, Waterford - 1.5 hours , Cork – 2.5 hours, Kerry – 3 hours) north (Belfast – 2 hours). This means Celbridge is ideally located for you to explore a little further afield either on day trips or short overnight trips to the many other cities and countrysides Ireland has to offer.

Celbridge village itself has a wide range of shops, cafes restaurants and pubs and is a short drive from two major shopping malls both of which have cinemas and main high street shops which will entertain on those one or two rainy days! Our house is located a ten minute walk from several large supermarkets and the local bus stop and a 20 minute walk to the village itself.

Celbridge is also home to Castletown House http://www.castletownhouse.ie Ireland’s oldest and largest Palladian House built in the early 1700’s. The House itself is surrounded by acres of parkland and runs a full summer programme of events including markets, musical performances and tours. Locals enjoy the surrounding parkland for lovely weekend walks and picnics – in addition local anglers take full advantage of the River Liffey which runs through the Castletown estate as do local canoeists. Then there is of course feeding the local ducks!

The Phoenix Park http://www.phoenixpark.ie is only a short drive away on the outskirts of Dublin city, is the largest enclosed recreational space in Europe and is home to Dublin Zoo, and Farmleigh House where open air markets and musical performances also take place in the summer. The Park is a great place to spend a day exploring and has a very informative Visitors Centre.

The surrounding areas of Meath, Kildare and Wicklow have a host of attractions including the historic sites of Newgrange http://www.newgrange.com and the Hill of Tara, as well as the wonderful gardens and waterfalls at Powerscourt http://www.powerscourt.ie the monastic settlement at Glendalough http://www.glendalough.ie and the Japanese Gardens and National Stud http://irishnationalstud.ie in Kildare. All are a short drive from our home (40 minutes to an hours drive).

For those interested in some golfing the world famous K Club (home to the 2006 Ryder Cup) is only a 20 minute drive away as is Carton House (Montgomerie designed course). For beginners a 9 hole course as well as driving range is located just outside the village with further local 18 hole courses located in Lucan.
