Our home

Our home is very welcoming with beautiful scenery around us. The main living room looks out over an inlet of the Atlantic ocean. This room has a wood/turf burning stove. The living room kitchen and sunroom all lead into each other but are each self contained. The sunroom has French doors leading to the back garden. This also has a computer, a toy cupboard and games for all ages.
Three bedrooms are on ground floor level, with the main bedroom having a double bed and en-suite with shower. The 2 other bedrooms are small, one with a single twin bed and the other can be converted from a single to a comfortable double. Upstairs has 2 spaces with a double and a single. These rooms are accessed from the main living room and don't offer the same degree of privacy as the downstairs bedrooms but are perfectly comfortable for short term stays.
The garden is two-leveled but we use the top level at the back and front of the house. It is a lovely space to relax on a summer's day. There is a fire pit and children's swings, as you can see in the photo! Though we don't have children we do have a lot of young friends and family who visit and our home is very child friendly.

Property features

Who we are

  1. We are two women, Eithne and Helen, 40 & 41 years old. We have lived in West Cork for over ten years. Helen is a potter and has a workshop and studio at our premises. We like to travel when we can but also very much enjoy spending time in our home and having friends over. We are interested in short exchanges in other parts of Ireland.
We cannot generally travel ourselves during the summer months because of Helen's pottery business, but we are happy to consider non-simultaneous exchanges, so it is possible for people to stay here at any time of the year (while we stay with close friends nearby). We have previously done 2 home exchanges. We love our home and take care of it and would do the same with any home we exchanged with.

The pottery website will be updated soon (we hope) but in the meantime if you like, you can look at the old site of www.dunbeaconpottery.com

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

West Cork is a beautiful part of Ireland. We are just an hour and a half from Cork international airport or a 4 hour drive from Dublin.

The house is 3 miles from the village of Durrus, with a small shop, restaurants and pubs. Bantry town is 15 minutes drive away, this is a large old market town with spectacular views over Bantry Bay and a stately House and gardens which are open to visitors. Bantry has a small supermarket, health food store, plenty of places to eat (there are a multitude of good places to eat in West Cork. From Bantry one can drive to Glengarriff and on to Kenmare and Killarney Lakes and National Park or to Gougane Barra or to the Beara peninsula. We are within 1-and-a-half to 2-and-a-bit hours drive to Kinsale, Cork City, Killarney, Fota Wildlife Park, Cobh. Half an hour to Skibbereen and an hour to Clonakilty. 15 minutes in the opposite direction to Bantry is Schull which is a charming and lively small town which is very popular with a great atmosphere in the summer time. The nearest beach is also 15 minutes away. Many of the larger towns have weekly Farmer's Markets. There are a couple of sailing and kayaking places nearby. There are whale spotting and fishing trips available. Golf course in Bantry. The Sheep's Head Way walking trail has a number of short walks and gorgeous views. A number of the beaches are good for surfing. If you are interested in ancient history this part of the world is abundant with archaeological sites including a stone circle just up the hill from us.
