Our home

We live in a large detached house in a friendly, rural Cretan village. The house is in an elevated situation in the unique forested peninsular of the Apokaronas overlooking a large wooded valley with distant views to seas and mountains. Spacious, light and luxurious with two large furnished balconies and a sit-out patio garden with barbecue, plus some surrounding land.

As the Apokoronas is a rural peninsular - with seaside resorts and with the large historic centres of Reythmno and Chania down from either side of our elevated peninsula - you will need a car. We will make available our Peugot 307 for you to get around. For your comfort and convenience you will be met at Chania Airport by friends who will transport you to Sellia, introduce you to our house and leave you with the car. They will also act as contact persons for any assistance needed. They speak fluent English, Greek and German.

Who we are

  1. We are a retired professional couple who have lived in Crete now for four years. We have children and grandchildren on the Wirral and in North Yorkshire and have lived ourselves in Yorkshire, the Wirral and on the Isle of Anglesey.

This would be our first home exchange - we love our home here and will treat yours with care and respect.

Our house was originally our holiday home which we developed from a one story Greek family house to a two story luxury home for our retirement.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Rural location in a traditional, friendly Cretan village which has its local fiesta in August - as do the surrounding villages. There is a local cafe-neon 5 mins walk down the hill in Litsada and a mini market and convenience store across the valley in Kefalas together with good tavernas. Our forested Apokoronas peninsula has lots of local quaint and interesting villages.

Vamos is our local historic administrative centre with traditional bars, cafés and Tavernas. It also has a Health Centre, Chemist,Post Office and Muncipal and Police services.

A short scenic drive down the ‘seven bends’ of our local mountain takes you to the popular seaside resort of Georgioupoli which has numerous bars, Tavernas, Cafes and the longest beach on Crete. Beyond the resort the beach stretches some further ten kilometres with quiet sections interspersed with beach bars and further Tavernas and includes some water sports. Also available near the resort is a good local stables for riding on the beach or inland. Biking and local tours, including to Lake Kournas, are also available from the resort. Interesting guided hikes take place from Vamos, where many of the annual Arts Festival cultural and entertainement events also take place in the month of August.

Our Apokoronas peninsula lies between the two large historic Greek/ Turkish/ Venetian historical centers of Chania (the former northern capital of Crete with its modern airport)and Reythmno. Both have ancient harbors, forts and historical museums and provide good sightseeing, shopping and a pleasant day excursion.

The present capital of Irakleon is a 2 hr. coach ride down the main national route with access to the historic Knossos remains, from the unique and advanced Minoan civilization. Another attraction into the inland mountains is the internationally known and spectacular Samarian Gorge - providing a challenge for walkers.

We will provide an up to date activity and house folder with instructions, contacts maps and recommendations on local features, events and Tavernas. We will also arrange for you to have the telephone number for a local English and Greek-speaking contact person should any problem or emergency occur.
