Our home

It's a house in the centre of Mandraki closed to the main square and very old. It was built 150 years ago and its walls are very thick keeping the house cool in summer and warm in winter.It has got a garden at the back with plants. In summer it's very quiet and the only sound you hear is the monks' singing and the monastery's bells. People are very friendly and you can buy fresh fish at the port every morning when the fishing boats arrive early in the morning. The climate is very mild and even Easter is a good time to enjoy sunny days while the heat of summer is mitigated by the "meltemi" the sea breeze.

Who we are

  1. My name is Lorena and my partner's name is Ido. We are both teachers in a state High school in Osimo a town in the centre east of Italy. I teach English while he teaches Maths and Physics there and at University. I've got two sons, 22 and 16. We have travelled a lot thanks to house swapping to Australia, twice, England, Hawaii and France swapping my beach flat (to view it go to homeexchange.com ID 38546). This is the first advert we post for this other house set in a beautiful greek island of Nisyros in the Dodecanneso. We are looking for weekend swaps during the school year at Venice where my younger son studies at the Navy Military College in San Elena and during school holiday from 22nd dec to 6 Jan. in the mountain close to skiing facilities. Our house is available all year round except August.

Your neighbourhood

The capital of Nissiros is Mandraki which boasts, whitewashed houses, colourful narrow lanes and the beautiful piazza "Ilikiomeni",the old woman's piazza, which is shaded by large trees. The town has a small folklore museum with interesting exhibitions. Of exceptional interest is the island's volcano which has both scientific importance and a unique natural beauty. Also, do not miss the following:

* Monastery of Our Lady Spiliani
* Historical & Folklore Museum
* Chapels of Announciation, the Holy
Cross, Virgin Lady and St. John the Theologician
* "Palaiokastro" - the acropolis of the
ancient city
* The ancient ruins of Argos
* "Drakospilia"
* Ruins of Early Christian basilicas scattered all over the island
* The traditional settlements of Nikia, Pali and Emborios with their traditional houses, colourful balconies and white washed yards.
There is a wide choice of beaches. The best are a beach called Cochlaki with rounded, black pebbles at Pali, at Pahia Ammos, a little difficult to access but definitely worth it, at White Beach. Anywhere you go the waters are guaranteed to be crystal clear! The volcano of Nissiros is still active. Lots of visitors from all over the world come to visit and explore it. You can cover most distances on foot or rented motorcycles. The island also disposes of buses, taxis or rented cars. You may take a daily trip to the nearby islands of Giali, Pyrgousa, Paxia and Strogili or take the tour of the island by boa.
