Our home

The house is a recently renovated country-style house. It has been selected by Elle Decoration magazine for a special issue featuring 20 mediterranean villas. We used traditional techniques and natural materials throughout. The walls are lime-washed, painted with natural pigments and there is a wooden floor. Part of the furniture is made by us, while part is antique restored and hand-painted. The house is decorated with objects from our travels around the world. The result is very warm, inviting and cosy. There is a fully equiped french-provincial style kitchen with a professional gas cooker. The bathroom is in a traditional tadeluct moroccan style, with a large bathtub. The master bedroom has a king-size bed and a balcony with views to the fruit tree garden and the hills beyond. The second bedroom has a single bed and a baby cot or second mattress is available if needed. In the living room there is a king-size sleeper sofa and the cast-iron fireplace. The dining area has windows all around and faces the sea. The house is bright and sunny and has magnificent views both to the sea and the countryside. All modern amenities are included. Car exchange is also possible. There is a mediterranean garden, with an outdoor sitting and dining area under a fig tree, complete with sofas, cushions and hammocks. In one end is a barbeque and wood-fire oven. A lavender-lined path leads to the house, among olive trees, pomegranade, almond, lemon and orange trees. Someone always tends to the fruit trees, herbs and vegetables, so whoever stays here will have access to all the seasonal produce and day-fresh organic eggs.
Non-simultaneous exchanges are also possible, as we have a second house on the island (a neoclassical mansion in the heart of the historical town, that works as a guesthouse) that will be also available for an exchange.

Who we are

  1. We are Elisa and Kostas, a couple in our fifties with a 12 year old daughter. I have worked as a language teacher and a translator, but the last few years we both work in the tourism section, after having renovated a historical neoclassical mansion, Villa Maria, that now works as a gastro-guest house where cooking courses take place for guests and where we love sharing our passion for good food! We are experienced travellers, spend a lot of time abroad and are very interested in meeting people from all over the world. We are also enthusiastic home exchangers, we have had many wonderful exchanges and we believe this is a great way to travel and get to know a place like a local. We are very flexible and being able to offer some of Villa Maria's beautiful apartments for exchange as well, we are also open to non-simultaneous exchanges.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Our house is located on Syros island, the capital of the Cyclades, 4hr. by boat (2.5hr. by highspeeds) from Piraeus and 20 minutes by plane from Athens. Ermoupolis, the main city is one of the most beautiful towns of Greece, with excellent neoclassical architecture and numerous well-maintained 19th century public buildings and mansions. The old part of the town dates from the middle ages and is in the typical island architecture. There are museums, historical sites, cultural life and nightlife, cafes, restaurants and tavernas. The house is located in the south, in Finikas village, 9km from Ermoupolis. Finikas is a small village with a fishing port and a marina. Its main beach is ideal for swimming, very child friendly, and there are some nice cafes and restaurants by the seaside, a 5min walk from the house. Two more secluded beaches with crystal clear water are an easy 10min walk. A supermarket, a bakery, a pharmacy and other shops are also within walking distance. The house itself is set apart, on a very quiet and secluded spot overlooking the village. There is a bus stop 5min walk from the house with regular transport to Ermoupolis and the island. Car rental also available. We could also arrange car exchange. The island has many excellent beaches, a varied landscape with breathtaking views and offers opportunities for interesting walking tours. As it is centrally located in the Cyclades, it is very convenient for excursions and day trips to nearby islands (Tinos, Myconos, Sifnos, Serifos etc.)Syros itself is lively throughout the year and is not overrun by tourists in the summer.
