Our home

Our home is an arts and crafts era farmhouse. It has a comfortable lived-in feel with wood floors and multiple evidence of its teenaged inhabitants. The main floor has three bedrooms, bathroom (with old clawfoot tub), kitchen and living room. The attic has a large bedroom and office/landing area as well as a bathroom with shower stall. We have a front porch and a patio/bbq area looking over a large perennial garden.

Who we are

  1. We are a family of five: George (biologist), Shelagh (secretary at a local College), Genevieve (15), Mackenzie (13), and James (11). The kids are all in french immersion schooling so are able to get by with their French (we hope). Our plan is to travel to Scotland to visit relatives near Edinburgh and then on to the south of France for a week or two holidays. We are interested in rural locations, near places of historical interest. Although we have never done a house exchange before we like the idea and are keen to give it a try!

Your neighbourhood

Our house is in the south of Nanaimo, approximately 5 minute drive from the city centre. Nanaimo is a city of approximately 75,000 people on the east coast of Vancouver Island, off the coast of British Columbia. We are about an hour's drive to Victoria and a hour and a half ferry ride from Vancouver on the mainland of B.C. This allows easy access to Vancouver and the interior of B.C.

Vancouver Island is known for its scenery, west coast rainforests, golf courses, mountain biking and wild beaches. Long Beach and Pacific Rim National Park, (good surfing and great beaches) is a morning's drive away and Parksville (20 min. north) has a fantastic beach and great camping opportunities. Whale watching (orcas and grey)is popular on both coasts of the island as is pacific salmon fishing.

Victoria (90 mins south) is well known for it's British heritage and fine gardens. It is home to world famous Butchart Gardens.

We also have a small cabin on Gabriola Island (a 20 minute ferry ride from Nanaimo). Gabriola is one of the Gulf Islands and is known for its artists community, laid back lifestyle and wild beaches.
