Our home

Our three years old three storey mid row home is comfortable, clean, and spacious from basement to roof. It has a fully equipped open plan kitchen with adjoining dining and living area with wooden floor. The living area is fully furnished with satellite TV, hifi, dvd/cd. From the living room there is direct access to the terrace, the garden and the garden house with all outside equipment such as toys for children, two adults and two children bikes, water pump and tube for watering plants. A simple garden shower is available and we also have a pool, which can be set up in summer time. While the sunny terrace faces south the pergola provides shadow area in hot days. There also is a swing for children. From the bedroom in the second floor you have a great view to the garden and surrounding landscape. Opposite to the bedroom there is another room presently used as office. Next to it there is a modern style bathroom including bathtub, shower and a double washbasin. A small room for household equipment, e.g. hoover, ironing board and cleaning agents, is also situated on the second floor. The roof is the domain of our two kids where they can play, work and sleep. Altogether we have three bedrooms. In the main bedroom there is a big water bed for two persons (2.00x2.20m). Currently there are lots of beds in the roof (45m² floor area): two double beds sizing 1.40x2.00m, a baby bed (1.40x0.70 m) and a sofa sleeping two persons. If necessary, one bed/the sofa could be moved into the office. We have wooden floors in the whole house, except for the kitchen, bathroom and the house entry area. WIFI is available in the whole house and LAN plugs available in nearly every room.

Who we are

  1. We are Sigrid and Hermann with our daughter Filomena (5 years) and our son Hermann (2 years) a family loving sports and the outdoors. We enjoy skiing, hiking, and biking in the Austrian Alps and boating on the northern pre-alpine Lake District. We are both scientist holding a PhD, Hermann in Geography, Landscape Ecology and Geoinformatics and Sigrid in Atmospheric Sciences. We have not done a home exchange before; however, we already shared accommodation with lots of international friends. We are keen to try what sounds a great way to see another country as a resident while in parallel working there.
Since our stay in New Zealand is approaching we hope to arrange an exchange in advance. Then we would be able to get to know our fellow exchangers via email and maybe Skype call first to see how we can facilitate their stay in Austria best.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Located in a picturesque landscape close to the city of Salzburg (10 km; 150.000 inhabitants; 435m asl) we live not far from the beautiful pre Alpine lakes to the north and the mountain environment in the south. Both can be reached in around 20 minutes car drive. Public transport by bus is available 400m walking distance. From here you can reach the city, the lakes and the alpine environment also in around 20 minutes.
Koppl (710m asl) is a lovely village where you get fresh milk and meat from farmers with happy cows around. We will provide you with recommendations (including reading material and maps) about nice hiking and biking trails or beautiful mountain huts and other sightseeing attractions. However, hiking and biking trails directly start from our door step. Within an hour walking distance you reach nice lookouts over Salzburg and its surroundings. In case you more into water related activities we can provide an inflatable canoe and wind surfing equipment which you can use on any of the lakes around.
A bit further away you might have a visit to the largest ice cave on our planet in Werfen, which is located in the National Park of Hohe Tauern, the largest Alpine National Park in Europe. You also might want to visit the highest mountain in Austria (Großglockner, 3798m asl) surrounded by the Glockner High Alpine Road and the larges glacier in the eastern Alps (Pasterze). In case you are more culturally interested, the Salzburg festivals, the Sound of Music, the birth place of Mozart or the numerous castles around might attract you. There are also two salt mines in Berchtesgaden (35km, Germany) and Hallein (25km, Austria) around which you can visit. Here you get insight in the still active salt mining procedure. Other highly recommended locations are Munich and Vienna, which are only 2 and 3,5 hours from home by public transport.
