Our home

Our cottage-style home is warm, comfortable, unpretentious and practical - ideally suited to both families with children or couples seeking a quiet retreat. Recently renovated and on one level, it has three double bedrooms and a study (with up-to-date computer equipment and broadband), a modern kitchen (with breakfast bar) and attached living room (with TV and stereo equipment). The room has reverse-cycle air conditioning. There is a separate lounge room with piano. There are two modern bathrooms, (one with full-sized bath and shower) and a separate laundry with washer and dryer. Floors are polished hardwood. Outside, there is a small car port, a garage, and separate large shed with two bicycles. Like most Aussies we have a barbecue. While we love our home we are not precious about it and would want you to feel totally at ease during your holiday. We have family and friends close by who would be happy to assist with any on-the-spot advice during your stay.

Who we are

  1. We (Bernadette, 40, an Australian, and Steve, 52, now an Australian but with family in the UK) are both journalists and moved around Australia before settling in Brisbane seven years ago. We work for the daily newspaper in town. When we are not doing journo things, we are looking after our very active four-year-old. Outside work we love books, music, and the outdoors, plus good food and great wine. We have not exchanged before but look forward to what appears to be a great way to see the world with some cost control thrown in! Please email if you are at all interested.

The house is on a 1600 square metre block of land in suburban Brisbane, perfectly located just five minutes walk from a shopping mall (supermarkets and general retail) and bus interchange, and 10 minutes walk from the station (12kms to the city centre with connections to the Gold and Sunshine Coasts). The home is adjacent to hectares of parkland. The back of the house boasts a big verandah (great for outdoor dining), leading on to a child-friendly, leafy garden with swimming pool. Behind the house is a creek with adjoining bike/walking trail (access 50 metres from the house) which meanders for more than 20 kilometres - great for morning and evening bike rides or walks. The house is very private and peaceful at the back, is not overlooked, and living on and around the verandah is a delight. Brisbane is one of the most go-ahead cities in Australia with an attractive CBD beside the river, some wonderful restaurants, galleries and museums, and picturesque bayside islands within reach of the suburbs. It is also a perfect base for access to the stunning beaches of the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, 70 minutes north or south, and other parts of Queensland and Australia. Brisbane has a major international and domestic airport with connections worldwide, Australia-wide and within the State (eg Cairns and the reef).
