Our home is a brand new apartment just 5 minutes to Jumeirah Beach in Dubai and The Walk; a kilometre strip of restaurants, cafes, shops and nightlife including the Hilton, Sheraton and Movenpick hotels for gourmet food and drink. The bedroom and the lounge area is very spacious and both have balconies with views across the marina and to the many pools and small gardens that surround our Jumeirah Beach Residences. There is wireless internet, phone, king bed and large built in wardrobe.
It has an ensuite bathroom with shower, bath and bidet.
The lounge area is also spacious with a sofa bed, large sofa, 2 chairs, DVD player, music system and dining table for 4. The floors are all tiled and there are rugs for floor covering. The apartment is cleaned by a maid once a week. The kitchen is large with dine-in bench top, microwave, toaster oven, full stove, fridge, dishwasher, washing machine and is fully equipped.
The balcony off the lounge area is perfect for an evening drink as the sun sets and the city settles down into evening with lights coming on all around you. Or for breakfast in the morning in the fresh sea air before or after your morning swim or to while away the time reading one of our books. There is another balcony off the kitchen.
There is also a large powder room/toilet with drawers and a clothes rack.
The decor is largely black or white furniture with rugs, contemporary art work and accessories. Jumeirah Beach Residences (JBR) are well known in Dubai for having The Walk; a one kilometer strip of restaurants, cafes, chic shops and street markets that comes alive at night with Emirati families and their kids and the young and old all walking up and down taking in the scene. Our apartment is 3 mins from the Walk and 5 minutes from the 1 km Beach which has turquoise seas and soft white sand beaches. The sea is safe with low surf and early in the morning its usually calm enough for a good swim along the shore. Bring your goggles or use our snorkels to see the fish beneath you.
Some people worry about safety in the Middle East. The UAE includes Dubai and Abu Dhabi is one of the safest places to live and the millions of expats who live here give safety as the top reason for their wellbeing and desire to stay. Personally we have never encountered any reasons for concern. You get an entry visa on arrival and it is not a hassle at all the government welcomes tourists and English and Arabic are the 2 official languages. Alcohol is permitted but it is often a good idea to bring some in duty free as it is hard to buy 'off the shelf'.
Famous shopping Malls such as Mall of Emirates with the ski fields; Ibn Battuta Mall with a rich history on display or Marina Mall overlooking million dollar boats are all 5- 15 mins in a Taxi. Taxis are cheap and plentiful.
If you want to explore further afield, take the Metro (10 mins walk away) to 'Old Dubai", a bus to Abu Dhabi or a desert explorer trip with any of the companies that will pick you up and take you back to your residence. For the top ten tourist attractions and other information about Dubai see http://www.expatwoman.com
For natural history enthusiasts there is much to explore 1-3 hours drive from Dubai. We can tell you more about the region and how to find some amazing places, including camping spots at the coast, mountain and in the desert.
If you are into gourmet food and drink try any of the Hotels nearby which have fabulous restaurants and bars.
Generally it is a very cosmopolitan area, with easy access to any of the delights of Dubai and only an hour away from Abu Dhabi.
The temperature in the European winter is about 26 degrees Centigrade so getting around is a pleasure. We are an Australian professional couple in our 50s. Rob is a University Professor and I am a part time Counsellor. Our kids are grown and we are keen travellers having visited many places in the UAE and Oman and in Europe since we left Australia 4 year ago.
One of our hobbies is gong on excursions with the Dubai Natural History Group as well as exploring some of the many areas of interest in and around here including the other Emirates. The oldest pearl in the world, over 7,500 years old, was just found in one of the Emirates last week. Oman is about an hour and a half drive away and there are some wonderful dhow cruises around the Mussanddum peninsula for example.
Maybe you want to spend a few days or weeks in the warmth of the sun before heading off to other destinations or perhaps have your first or second taste of the exotic Middle East. We are negotiable on dates and times as we have a second home. We are an Australian professional couple in our 50s. Rob is a University Professor and I am a part time Counsellor.
