We have have recently remodeled our beautiful 3 bedroom/3 bath Spanish-style home in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles. Our neighborhood, Silver Lake, is quiet and family friendly, full of hip restaurants and boutiques, and yet minutes from all the attractions the city has to offer. LA is a sprawling city, so a centrally located home like ours makes it easy to visit everything. We have tons of local restaurants serving food from around the world at every price range.
Our large back deck gives a panoramic view of the mountains and gently rolling hills that look more like Tuscany than a major city. It's a perfect spot for a sunset drink, a morning cup of coffee, or dining all fresco (almost year-round!). You can eat from our edible front garden, with fresh fruit, vegetables, and berries out the front door. Our neighbors are all friends, and we all often welcome visitors from around the globe.
The house is rich with warm, handmade details. We have a large, gourmet kitchen with an eat-in bar and open plan flow to the dining room and deck. The walls are hand-tinted Venetian plaster and the floors both hardwood and decorative Mexican tile. Our master bedroom suite features a walk-in closet and jacuzzi tub, with a private deck.
We have high speed wireless internet access throughout the house, satellite TV with TiVo in a separate media/family room, and a stereo with outdoor speakers on the deck (nothing like a little jazz as you watch the golden California sun set on the mountains). LA is a suburban/urban city, and our house feels far removed from the bustle of the town. Yet we are minutes from Universal Studios, Hollywood, the beach, the Getty Center, Downtown LA (including MOCA, Chinatown, Dodger Stadium, Staples Center, and Little Tokyo), and Disneyland–basically right in the middle of everything. The beach is just a few minutes away across town.
Five minutes from our house you'll find Griffith Park, the largest city park in America, with miles of mountainous hiking trails, the LA Zoo, the Observatory, the Western Heritage museum, a carousel, horseback and pony riding, multiple tennis courts, and four public golf courses. Walking its beautiful trails, you will think yourself far removed from the city.
Silverlake is one of LA's few, true, neighborhoods. Long a haven for artists, writers, and architects, it's maintained many of its slightly bohemian charms despite becoming one of the hippest areas of the city over the last few years. There are many delicious neighborhood ma-and-pa restaurants with food from all over the world, as well as some of the very best upscale eateries the city has to offer. Plenty of opportunities for star-gazing (of the celebrity kind), but in a far less pretentious atmosphere than the Westside and Beverly Hills.
Given LA's unique topography, you can also visit the desert (Palm Springs-unbelievable golf!) in 90 minutes, and mountain alpine forests (Big Bear, Snow Summit) in less than two hours. During the winter, it is possible to ski and visit the beach on the same day.
If you scuba dive (we do) LA is actually a great place to do it. The Channel Islands feature kelp forests 100 feet high and a variety of interesting sea life. We have an 11-year old son, so there are plenty of toys, balls, and X-box games to play with. We are friends with all of our neighbors, so you will have lots of people to call on for recommendations and resources. All in all, we are perfectly situated to make your LA vacation comfortable and convenient.
The master bedroom has a king size bed, Charlie's room has two bunks, and the couch features a very comfortable queen size padded air mattress. In a pinch, we could put another air mattress in the office.
Smoking is okay outside on the deck. We have two lovable, very clean, and low-maintenance cats.
