Description of our house
This is a charming, original beach cottage high on a bluff with a lovely view of the ocean from the living room, dining area, patio, and one of the bedrooms. On quiet nights, we can hear the waves! The home has a living room with fireplace, a functional kitchen with dining area, two bedrooms, a newly renovated bathroom, a sunny entrance porch, and large front and back yards. One bedroom has a queen-sized bed and the other has twin beds. The home is in Cardiff-by-the-Sea about thirty minutes' drive north of downtown San Diego. Furnishings are cozy and comfortable. We do not have internet access at the house, but cafes and a library are very nearby. You'll definitely need a car -- either ours or a low-cost rental from one of the nearby agencies. This is our second home, so we can welcome visitors any time. However, our travel is usually limited to school vacations in December, spring, and the summer.

Our neighborhoodThe neighborhood is a mixture of original beach cottages like ours and new high-end homes. Most are year-round residences. The home is only a few block (walking distance) to the beach, shopping, restaurants, and walking trails through a wildlife refuge. Nearby attractions include Sea World, San Diego Zoo, Legoland, the Del Mar Race Track, the California Mexico-border, downtown San Diego with its nightlife and restaurants, museums, and parks. Disneyland and the desert are about one hour away by car. You can reach the local mountains in 90 minutes and Los Angeles in about two hours. There's also a train station nearby with service to many of these destinations.

Something about ourselvesRichard is a retired school administrator and Judith is a childhood psychologist who teaches at a college in Los Angeles. We have four grown children and two sets of twin grandchildren. We have lived in Europe several times -- Richard in Belgium for five years and both of us in Denmark for two years. We have traveled extensively in Europe and Richard also travels in South America. We have had several opportunities to travel in Northern and Eastern Europe with college students who are studying abroad. Last summer we joined friends on a home exchange in England and are now hooked on the idea! We'd like non-simultaneous exchanges if possible so we can make sure our guests have everything they need in our beach house, but simultaneous exchanges will work work too. We'd like to begin with a stay somewhere in Europe around March 25 - April 4, 2009 and then return to other interesting destinations during summer 2009, possibly in early to mid June and/or August.
