Description of our house
Our beautiful single level home has1650 sqft and has 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. It sits on a 15000 square foot lot. There is a king size futon bed in the master bedroom, a twin size bed in each of the kids rooms and a queen sleeper sofa in one. Can be rearranged if needed. A large family room, modern kitchen with Silestone counters and large living room/dining room are on the opposite side of the house. Family room, living room and master bedroom have cathedral ceilings. There is a laundry room with washer and dryer. We have high-speed (DSL) wireless internet so bring your own laptop or use our PC. There's a TV hooked up to digital cable, a DVD player, VCR and a surround sound system in the living room. We have two large yards, one out back with a large patio and an even bigger front yard. We grow organic vegetables, lettuce and herbs in the back that you are welcome to harvest. There is a second patio in the front yard which is where we usually relax. The house sits at the end of a cul-de-sac. The single level design and generous floor plan is especially well suited for guests with mobility problems. We have plenty of toys and children's books (English and German) as well as kids DVDs and videos. There's also sand box in the side yard. I'm a bike enthusiast and have a nice road and mountain bike that you may use (large frame size). We also have two kid's bikes.

Our neighborhoodOur neighborhood is very friendly and safe and most people have lived here for many years. There are many children on our street and because it is a cul-de-sac and thus little traffic comes through you can let them play outside safely. There are community parks with playgrounds in the neighborhood.
Though in Carlsbad by ZIP code, our house actually sits right on the border of Carlsbad, Encinitas and Olivenhain. We are just a few minutes from the beach with two of Southern California's premier surf spots, Swami's and Moonlight Beach practically on your doorstep. Excellent shopping is just down the street, along El Camino Real in Encinitas and three malls and one outlet mall are within a 20-30 minute's driving range. We are also quite central to other attractions like the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal park, Seaworld, Quail Botanical Gardens, Balboa Park, Disneyland, Magic Mountain and many more. We can help you choose. World class golfing is also close by, for example in the La Costa Resort (5 minutes away) or up on Torrey Pines in La Jolla (20 minutes away). The closest major airports are San Diego (SAN), about 45 minutes by car, Los Angeles (LAX) just under two hours away, John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana (SNA) a little over an hour out. The very closest airport is Carlsbad, McClellen Palomar (CNQ) that is only about 15 minutes from our home and has several connections daily to LAX.

Something about ourselvesThe owners of this house are Susanne and Michael. We are in our 40s and originally from Germany but have lived in the San Diego area since 1999. We are both scientists by training and Michael works as a neurobiologist at the Salk Institute in La Jolla. Susanne runs the children's programs at Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas. Both our daughters were born here in 2000 and 2002. We try to raise them bilingual and so we have English and German books and videos in the house. I also speak a little French. We don't smoke and are very responsible people. We don't have any large pets but 2 geckos in a cage in the family room and two chinchillas that live in a large cage in the garage. Both are very easy to care for.
For 2009 would prefer an exchange to somewhere that can be reached within a 1-2 day drive. In terms of time we depend on the local school's calendar but are otherwise flexible
