The apartment block is situated on the outskirts of the town of Davos, a world-famous mountain resort with ca. 12,000 permanent inhabitants. Within only five minutes' walking distance, you can reach shops ( with some excellent bakeries for your breakfast croissants among them! ), train station, bus stops etc.. Hiking, mountain biking and walks along the picturesque river as well as into the mountains can start right at our doorstep. This is a great hiking and mountain biking area!
Davos offers all the excellent amenities of a tourist resort, less busy in summer than in winter. Apart from a wide range of sports facilities, there are museums and cultural events, e.g. the 'Davos Festival' in summer, featuring young musicians in a series of world acclaimed concerts. Davos is also world-famous as a winter resort.
In addition, Davos is a gateway to the various valleys of the Grisons offering splendid alpine scenery. The Engadine, with its well-known holiday resorts such as St. Moritz and various hidden gems to discover, is only an hour's drive away.
Within two hours, you can reach the picturesque and bustling cities of Chur, St. Gallen and Zurich with their medieval city centres and imposing cathedrals ( and great shopping! ) - or the Ticino, the Italian part of Switzerland with its lakes and southern charm.
All these places can also be reached by train or postal coach, as the Swiss public transport system is very well developed. My wife Christine and I are in our fifties. We have two grown kids, Laura, who lives in Davos, and Tobias, who lives in Lucerne. Both of us teach at the local grammar school (English and History) and we are very interested in the culture and history of English-speaking countries. We are avid readers, my wife paints and I go in for sports like tennis, skiing and mountain-biking.
Our favourite exchange period is the summer holidays ( beginning of July to mid-August ). October might be an option for a two-week exchange - great time for hikes, but there just might be some snow further up.
Our spring holidays are rather late ( April / May ), and this is low season in Davos - we would certainly consider an exchange to a sunny and warm seaside place or an interesting city then.
