Our Spanish home sits between an umbrella pine forest on one side and the Barbate river valley on the other. Both are protected nature reserves. The house is 90 sq.m, not large, but sitting on one third acre of land with 20+ fruit trees (orange, lemon, tangerine, figs and olives depending on the time of year) and an organic vegetable patch providing vegetables.
We have a 90 sq.m roof terrace with a recently built Moroccan corner providing shade during the day and a good spot for evening drinks with a panoramic views of the river valley and hills in the background.
We are one of 35+ private houses built on a former olive grove just 2km from Vejer.
The living room is quite spacious and well appointed with a basic open-plan kitchen. There are two small, but adequate bedrooms sleeping four people in twin beds and a compact bathroom with shower, basin, WC and bidet and not much room to swing a cat!
In the garden there is an almacen i.e. a square white building which acts as garden shed and utility room. Between the almacen and the house there are two mature cork trees which provide shade for the barbeque area and a place to hang the two hammocks.
Although we do not currently have internet in our house, there are several internet cafes in Vejer. Our town, Vejer de la Frontera, is one of the famous white villages - Pueblos Blancos - of Andalucia. To see it for yourself just google: Vejer de la Frontera, Spain and check out the images. We are within easy reach of Gibraltar (1 hour) and historic Jerez and Cadiz (45 minutes). Further afield are Seville, Cordoba, Ronda, Sierra de Grazelemas and Granda (1.5 - 4 hours travel time). If interested in the Moorish history of Andalucia, these are all great places to visit. The Portuguese border is about 3 hours away. Morocco is a 40 minute drive to Tarifa and then a 35 minute speedy crossing to Tangiers. There are outstanding sandy beaches between 4 - 15 km from the house. These beaches are considered the best in Spain with Atlantic waters and some are lined with inexpensive fish restaurants. August is the busiest time of year and it can also be very warm, 30 - 35 degrees C.
This is a good area for birding and also whale watching in Tarifa. A car is a necessity and we will provide information on inexpensive Spanish car rental firms which we have been using for 8 years. Jeff and Christina are both in their mid-60s. Jeff has been in international marketing for 30 years and now runs his own company in which Christina works. Although we claim to work full-time, we do enjoy regular breaks in our house in Andalucia. We are very keen gardeners (lots of automatic timers so nothing for you to do)and we enjoy swimming in the sea, Bridge, walking, golf and exploring new places. As we now have more time we would like to go further afield. We have two grown children, one in Australia and one a post-graduate student in Brighton. We can be very flexible with timing.
