Description of our house

Our wood-built house on a acre of land has been added to lovingly over the years. We never tire of the views of the inlet as they change constantly. When the tide is out horses run on the sand and children and adults alike gather clams to bake on the BBQ. We have a 2.7 metre inflatable dinghy with 3.5 hp outboard for use of our guests. We feed the native birds throughout the year and are rewarded by their chorused "thank yous"! The house has a heat pump and enclosed gas fire which looks like a real one in the living room. The master bedroom is up the circular stairs with an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe. Downstairs the two bedrooms share a large family bathroom with shower as well as bath. There are heaters and electric blankets in all the bedrooms. We spend a lot of time in the sunroom and will often eat with guests there, just to enjoy the views. We are next door to a farm and rolling green hills are our other vista. The house is easy care, easy to live in and is just plain friendly. Please smoke outside if you wish and take care of your butts - thank you.

Purakaunui is a small, picturesque settlement 25 minutes from Dunedin. Dunedin is a university city of 150,000 with a strong Scottish heritage and founded on gold. We are a 15 minute drive from Port Chalmers where there is a supermarket, shops and restaurants. Five minutes in the other direction is the Orokonui Ecosanctuary with native flora and fauna - right down to our iconic kiwi! On the peninsula opposite is the albatross colony (where the only Royal Albatross in the world nest on a mainland), also seals, penguins, sealions and birdlife in abundance. Beautiful, almost deserted beaches are all around us and Murdering Beach is famous for its surfing. Central Otago with its mountains, lakes, skiing (in winter), wineries and orchards is a 3 - 4 hour drive away and our four wheel drive RV will take you to most places. A vintage rail trip is popular and the Central Otago Rail Trail is a must for bikers and walkers alike. New Zealand abounds in breath-taking scenery and we like to think that most of it is right at our doorstep. Something about ourselves

Kelvin is a retired barrister/pilot and Karen returned from a lifetime overseas to marry him! She had previously owned and chartered a yacht in the Mediterranean for 20 years and prior to that had worked for the UN in Rome. We love to travel and have many friends in the UK and Europe and we take turn-about staying with each other. Sometimes we meet halfway (that is our friends, not Kelvin and Karen!). We have not house-swapped before but think it a wonderful idea and perhaps the start of other great friendships. We are interested in the world around us in all respects. We are gentle with other people's property and would like them to be the same with ours - we are really looking forward to this new adventure. ![]()
