Our house is situated in a suburb of Amsterdam, called IJburg. It is an extremely comfortable house with three floors. It has three bedrooms and can easily house six people. The ground floor has an entrance hall, toilet, kitchen and living-room. There is a small, but very nice garden and a garage which has space for a car and several bikes. The house has very large windows and is therefore always sunny and light. As Gerard writes for websites and educational magazines, there are lots of DVDs, blu rays and all kinds of computer games available. It has one bathroom and one additional toilet.

IJburg is a suburb of Amsterdam that is as Dutch as you could wish for. Until 10 years ago this used to be water. In this reclaimed area a new trendy suburb has come into existence that is an ideal mix of city life and safe, quiet living. It is a child friendly area with little traffic. It is the bike and not the car that is the norm here. It only takes 15 minutes to reach the city centre. A tram will take you to Central Station in a quarter of an hour. The area itself has all kinds of shops and restaurants and is even home to the most popular city beach in the city: Blijburg. On the other side of the island there is a large park and biking paths leading to the medieval Muiderslot or to fishing villages. The area is easily accessible by both car and public transport and is an ideal point of departure for visits to the rest of the country, such as Volendam and Edam (within 30 minutes by car). You can also visit cities like Enkhuizen, The Hague, Leiden, Delft, Haarlem and Alkmaar, all within an hour's drive.

Gerard and Monique are both teachers of English at secondary schools in Amsterdam. We are experienced home exchangers and have participated in more than 30 exchanges. We have two sons, Mees (born in 2003) and Koen (2005). They have been with us on many exchanges and always like the new environment and toys to play with. We enjoy visiting sights and museums, but we also love the beach and swimming pools. Our previous exchanges have always been very pleasant and we have not had any bad experiences. If you like, we can provide you with many references.
