Our house is located in a friendly family neighbourhood in Amsterdam. The city center is within 20 minutes reach. You can either take the bicycle and ferry over the IJ-bay to central station; or you can take the bus to the center, from where you can walk, cycle, or take any other means of public transportation. You can also easily drive to the center by car. Our neighbourhood has plenty of free parking space.
At the same time, you can easily move away from the city and discover beautiful Dutch nature and villages surrounding Amsterdam. You do not even need your car for this. If you would like to go to the beach, there are multiple options at a half hour or 45 minutes drive.
If you want to visit other parts of the Netherlands, or other cities, you can take the train from Amsterdam Central Station across the IJ-bay, or simply take the car and drive. We are a family of four: our twins Nora & Tijmen just turned 10 this July. They are happy children who enjoy school (most of the time). They both like music and sports: Nora plays the guitar and loves to sing. She can be seen often on her skateboard and she goes to circus school. Tijmen plays keyboard, and – like Nora – he plays outside a lot, and has a football glued to his foot. Xander is his own boss, organising internationally oriented knowledge conferences on water solutions and sustainability issues. My background is languages: I studied Japanese, but I also speak English, French and a little bit of German. I recently went back to university to get my Master's in teaching French as a foreing language. We have two cats, named Apple and Diesel. They exit and enter the house via their very own cat doors.
As a family we enjoy spending time together, as well as with friends and family. We love traveling: since the children were born, we took them to Greece, France, Croatia, Portugal, and the United States. We enjoy beautiful rural areas, but we also take city trips to Budapest, Paris, Berlin and so on.
In our daily lives, we love spending down time at home in our quiet neighbourhood, but with the city centre within reach we also visit museums and we go to the cinema. We meet our friends at home for a glass of wine or a beer and some lovely food, or we go out to have lunch, diner, a glass of wine in a bar, or (my personal favourite)a concert.
We have happily arranged for an exchange with a family near Paris between April 27 and May 5, 2013.
We are still open to new ideas and offers for the summer holidays:
