Description of our house
Our home was built in 1885, and is situated at the dyke of a canal. In summer, there is some traffic on the canal, mainly recreational small boats. We love our home very much. We bought it some 4 years ago, and since then we have worked hard at it to restore it in the original style and atmosphere (old Dutch style). It has a living, a large kitchen with dining table, a study room with computers (internet available), bathroom with separate shower and bath, and 4 bedrooms. The 5th bedroom and 2nd bathroom are in a separate building. The house contains all the ‘normal’ luxury, like fridge, freezer, dish washer, internet, etc. We have a canoe and a rowing boat for use on the canal. The garden is about 500 square meters, with a large terrace. Garden furniture, barbeque, bikes, etc. are available. We have two easy-going cats and some rabbits.

Our neighborhoodThe house is just outside Alkmaar, which is about 45 minutes north of Amsterdam and famous for its weekly cheese market. Alkmaar is a well known holiday destination, and besides the cheese market has a cheese museum, many canals (canoeing), many old buildings and houses, a Beatles museum, a beer museum, a large variety of restaurants, and many shops (both mainstream and many small boutiques, especially in the old 16th century area). The beach is about 20 minutes away (you can see the dunes from the living area of the house), as are the woods, both beautiful areas for biking. The area is famous for its old wind mills, many still working, water ways, and polders (walking, biking, canoeing).
Alkmaar has two railway stations, and has regular bus services through the city and surroundings. There is a bus stop 1 minute walking distance from our house.
Amsterdam is close by and is famous for the Rijksmuseum, Madam Tussaud, Anne Frank house, the canals, the van Gogh Museum, and many more.

Something about ourselvesWe are Erik Jan & Jeanette, we have 4 kids: 2 girls, Elenne and Laureen are 19 and 17 years old. 2 Boys; Raphael and Melcher 15 and 13 years of age. Our eldest daugther is not traveling with us, this year. Jeanette is working as a community nurse and has her own business organizing creative workshops. Erik Jan works in the biotechnology industry. We are experienced travellers in Europe and Australia. We are music lovers; we play different musical instruments (we have a piano and an organ in the house).
