((((Correction: nearest airport is in Tangier, the Ibn Batouta Airport (TNG)which is served by Iberia and Royal Air Maroc both linked into major world-wide networks. Travelocity and such sites do not readily access info on Tangier, so use Madrid, Barcelona, or Casablanca which all have direct flights to Tangier. ))))

Commanding views of city from 37'x 9'ft. terrace; rooms ample and comfortable, kitchen 8'x 12' ft, dining room-office 11'x 12 ft, etc.; bright and sunlit from 3 sets of large double sliding doors; views to the Bay of Tangier and the sunrise-east, city and mountains-south, and sunset and main boulevard -west. This is the sunlight and sky beloved by Matisse and Delacroix. Bldg. less than 10 years old, quality construction, owners have office on premises, well-maintained, scrubbed daily top to bottom, dependable Otis elevator, conscientious doorman who lives on premises and is able to do grocery deliveries, etc. on request. Residents quiet, congenial, helpful, 4 apt. per floor. There are several doctor, lawyer, and other professional offices in the bldg. The kitchen, bath, and laundry are equipped with modern, top-quality appliances. Antique French and Moorish furnishings. Technology: Internet, TV (CNN plus US movie channels + hundreds of international channels), radio, CD and DVD players. Ideal for one or two people, but 3 or 4 can be accommodated if using the queen-size sleep couch. Couch unopened is comfortable for one. I have a housekeeper who comes twice a month to cook and clean. Arrangements can be made for daily, partial week, weekly, etc. help from an honest, hard-working woman with 20+ years experience of trustworthy service in the home of friends here. Due to the 10th storey balcony, I do not recommend that children beyond crawling stage up until age 9 come. The balcony is 100% closed up to a height of 3' with strong walls of smooth, clean tiles and there is an outdoor hose, plentiful water, and a large tub for kiddie baths, but it is open to the sky and the height make it unsuitable for climbers or the too adventuresome under 10. Crawling and calm are safe; climbing is definitely not. As you exit the building there is a bakery-pastry shop-light meal restaurant- and takeout of Moroccan specialties with a cafe in and out. The next bldg. is also a cafe which serves breakfasts, crepes, ice cream sundaes. From the apt. all the interesting areas of the city are within a 20-minute walk- the old city, kasbah, spectacular views all the way to Spain. The farmers' markets are AMAZING! Within 5 minutes there are restaurants, shops, the beach, pharmacies, medical facilities, virtually everything. A car is not necessary. I do not have one by choice. Taxis are even more available than in NY, but costing 60 cents a ride. Large Mercedes taxis are readily for hire for trips out of town to explore the countryside, other beaches, other cities. Travel to Fez, Marrakech, Rabat, Casablanca and Chefchouen is also easy by train and modern motorcoach with stations in town. Car rental agencies abound, independents as well as Hertz and Avis.

Bonus: Tangier has large, modern ferry boats that go to Spain several times a day. The trip takes 1/2 hour and just a 9 mile crossing. Once in Spain, car rental, bus, and train transportation are available for visiting the closest cities of Malaga, La Ronda, Seville, Granada, and the Costa del Sol. Spain has superb hiking trails. Air transportation is also available from Tangier. I find Iberia Airlines the most useful for my own travel but other companies such as Easyjet, RyanAir, Jet4You, and Royal Air Maroc also depart from Tangier (TNG) Tangier is a good hub for exploring Spain and Morocco. There is also a several day ferry crossing (a mini-cruise) from Tangier to Sete, France.
Tangier's climate is similar to that of southern California. Heating and cooling equipment are rarely needed. My apt. comes equipped with an electric space heater in each room just in case. The cross-ventilation and seabreezes take care of warm days. I also have a powerful fan, just in case. In winter the sun shining through the large windows supplies the heat needed. In summer, shutters that adjust to all openings control the sun's access to the interior of the apt. Indoor temperatures are always high 60s to mid 70s. Outdoor temperatures range from low 50s in winter to mid 80s in summer. Tangier is a summer vacation destination for many Moroccans from the interior looking for cooler temperatures, beaches, and the water. Many Europeans in winter come to Tangier to find warmth, blue skies, and beaches.
There is so much to say about Tangier and Morocco and Moroccans. I am biased. I love living here. I find Moroccans to be friendly, helpful, and hospitable. Every day can bring some delightful encounter. Just go out the door and see what life brings you. The sidewalks and seaside parks are full of families. Just observing is entertaining and informative. In the US I never had an accurate picture of Moroccans. In fact, I knew very little. It is easy to feel great affection for the people here because of their kindness and easy naturalness. If you speak French, Spanish, or Arabic, you'll have no trouble communicating. English is not as widely spoken, but many shopkeepers, taxi drivers, and professional people speak English. Moroccans seem to have a gift for languages. Many, even those with little formal education, speak 4 or more languages. I chose Tangier out of all the world for my retirement years. It is in Tangier where the Atlantic, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the Mediterranean meet with accompanying variety of water colors, wind patterns, and open starry sky at night. One of my goals for my life was to live in a place where I could see the sunrise and the sunset. I've succeeded in finding it - and seeing the sea and the mountains are fantastic bonuses. There are fascinating cultural elements of the Berber, Jewish, and Arab Moroccan ancient and modern cultures and there are remnants of the days of Phoenician, Roman, Portugese, English, Spanish, and French influences.
Tangier is a fishing port with impressive amounts of fresh fish daily coming to the colorful fish market and sold by street vendors coming right to your door. A wonderful fish meal in a restaurant can cost less than $5. Fruits and vegetables are brought in daily by farmers. Both the flavor and cost will delight you, e.g. 50c/lb. strawberries, sold on carts, mountains of them and 20c/lb for oranges. Oh yes, the apt. has an electric orange juicer.

I am a single, retired American woman living alone in Morocco. I have 3 grown children in the US and in Australia. I teach English in Morocco. Because of our widespread residences, it is infrequent that my daughters and I can be together. Our goal is for all of us to be together in Nov., ideally from the 1st to the 27th, although there is some flexibility there, maybe 2 shorter visits of a week to 10 days from US visitors could be accommodated. We are looking for an apt or house within 2 hours of Upper East Side via public transportation. One daughter lives with her husband and 2 young children on the Upper East Side 60s. Another daughter is a research biologist in Michigan and will join the third sister and me for 1 week. My daughter and her husband will be coming from Australia with their 18 month old. The accommodations we need are for 4 adults and 1 baby. We are all non-smokers, all in good health, comfortable with a couch, flexible, no special needs, not difficult to please. Our goal is to be together in November 2012 to spend family time.
