My home, relatively new in my village of Carassai, is only about 200 years old. It is being entirely redone and I have come to live here in retirement. In addition to a gourmet kitchen, the house has a lovely separate dining room and a large music room where I play chamber music with friends. Upstairs is a very sunny living room with double sofabed. From here you can see views of the distant mountains. From my bedroom I see the Town Hall and the main piazza. From the other rooms upstairs (guest bedroom and my study) we look on the 15th century ramparts of the Castello Vecchio. The marchighani are very friendly and happy to welcome you to their lovely land.

Most exchangers bring their own cell phones for easy communication. Internet cafes about 20 minutes away.

This part of Italy, as yet largely undiscovered by tourists from outside of Italy, is very beautiful and unspoiled. In addition to the shoe-making industry centered around Porto St. Elpidio, it is mainly an agricultural area (fruit trees, nurseries, vineyards), and is lovely in all the seasons. The Adriatic Sea is just 15 km. from my house, with all the summer activities you can imagine. Plenty of beach-side seafood restaurants, chic shops, bicycles, bikinis, some of the best gelato bars on earth, etc. Because most of the towns in Le Marche are ancient, fortified places built on hilltops, you can see the sea from quite far inland. If you look inwards, you will see some of the highest mountains in Italy, the Sibilini, where there is good skiing in the winter. A main train line runs north-south along the coast, as does the autopista, connecting Carassai easily to airports in Pescara and Ancona (RyanAir arrives at both from London). Vineyards in the region have won international prizes. And music and music festivals abound. Le Marche is renowned for its over 20 remarkable jewelbox theaters and opera houses, built mostly in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Art and architecture are quite special as well(Urbino, Loretto, Ascoli Piceno, Macerata). Near Ancona, the Monte Conero National Park is a lovely excursion for the day. And from Ancona you can take a boat to Croatia, or visit Castelfidardo, the world center of accordian making.

In Italy I am Giovanna (Jane in other places, Juana in Spain, where I live part of the year). I am a musician (viola/violin) and have loved travelling and visiting wonderful places since I retired in 1995 at the ripe old age of 52. I am single, still have family in the US, and I describe myself as a "compulsive flyer". My greatest passion is music, both as a participant and as a listener. Since I have come to live in Le Marche, I have been fortunate enough to have played with a professional orchestra (Accademia Adriatica) and be a founding member of the board, as well as working for the Artistic Director in his Music Festival Cupramarittima.

I have been a home-exchanger for years and will treat your home as my own, and I am sure you will do the same. I have had only good experiences with home exchanging.
