Our home is on the outskirts of Brno - the second largest city in the Czech Republic - in the village of Rozdrojovice. The town centre is a twenty-minute drive. We live in a small terraced house built in 2004. There is a living room connected with the kitchen on the ground floor, a courtyard and a small, but beautiful garden. In the living room there is a fireplace which has become a centre of the house. On the first floor is a bedroom, bathroom, a children´s room with normal-sized bed and a study, with open space under the roof that can be used by an adventurous child as an additional bedroom. A forest is a 10-minute walk from our house, as well as the Brno dam lake, a nice place for both summer and winter activities. Brno itself has a truly strategic position for visitors from distant parts of the globe to see a lot from Central Europe. Prague is a two-hour drive (200 km), Vienna even less (130 km), and similarly the capital of Slovakia Bratislava (120 km). There are a number of great UNESCO World Heritage sites within close vicinity: the functionalist Villa Tungenhat in Brno, Valtice-Lednice area, the towns of Kroměří¸, Olomouc, Třebíč and Telč, the Zelená Hora church in ´ďár. In addition, there are old romantic castles and spectacular limestone caves with a deep abyss (Macocha).
The town of Brno does not boast of architecture as beautiful as Prague (apart from functionalism, which is quite unique here), but it is a city of culture: Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, the Opera, chamber music ensembles, outstanding choirs, musical theatre, a number of exhibition halls, a lively jazz scene.
Activities: cycling, hiking, swimming, skating, cross-country skiing (downhill is a lot better in the Alps in Austria, with the nearest resorts some 4 hours drive). Golf course 5 min drive.
Wine cellars and generally wine culture, great beer, nice countryside. A forest is a 10-minute walk from our house, as well as the Brno dam lake, a nice place for both summer and winter activities. We are a fairly unusual family - our relationship ripened only after about 25-year acquaintance: each of us has two adult children (from 23 to 35) and together we have a sweet little boy Oliver (he will be 4 in June 2013). Peter is free-lance English teacher and interpreter, Hana is free-lance translator (translating books from English into Czech). We share cultural and sports interests – skiing (mainly cross-country) and cycling. In summer we share a dream job: we both are cycling guides for a travel agency, guiding foreign tourists - cyclists in the most beautiful parts of Central Europe. When we are in your place and you in our house, there are our four adult children (they live on their own, two of them in Brno, they all are fluent in English) who could be helpful with any arrangements you want to make.
Ideally, we would love to spend Christmas and New Year 2013 in the heat and warmth (as we already did in 2011 in Thailand and in 2012 in South Africa) and allow someone else to experience traditional Christmas atmosphere in Central Europe. It is lovely but we've seen it too often...
We prefer to arrange our exchange in advance to get to know one another, to make for a better stay and enable both parties to book enough in advance to get a good rate in terms of flights.
We are looking for an exchange for around 6 weeks, back to back exchange in two different places (in one country) would also be considered.
In summer we would appreciate 2-3 weeks anywhere in Europe, we will consider every offer.
