Our beautiful, clean, and SUNNY apartment has four rooms (a bedroom, a living room, two studies) plus a kitchen, a bathroom and a spacious chamber. All in all, our recently refurbished (May 2011), nicely decorated and furnished apartment is quite large (ca. 120 sq.m. = 1,200 sq.ft) and comes with high-speed internet (WiFi), a hi-fi system, two large flat-screen TVs (including the German version of TiVo), two DVD players, a washing machine, a dishwasher and a fully equipped kitchen that comfortably seats four people.
We also have a spacious, nicely planted (flowers, herbs & tomatoes), ivy-covered and sunny recessed balcony (loggia) facing the south: it's huge by Berlin standards (ca. 6 sq.m. = 60 sq.ft.) and seats up to six people. So even if you don't care to go out from time to time, you can still spend the day outside on the balcony and enjoy a relaxing and lazy day reading or snoozing on a deckchair or have dinner at sunset.
The homely and modern furnished apartment is situated on the third floor of a typical Berlin pre-WWI residential building (built around 1900), with laminate floors, high ceilings, and truly lovely neighbors all around.
Visitors and previous home exchangers have said that we live in a neighborhood that is like a mixture of New York's Brooklyn, San Francisco's Castro, and London's Camden Town Market with Parisian boutiques and the typical post-1989 East Berlin charme and atmosphere altogether. After having done quite some travelling to verify, we do agree... :) Our beautiful, clean, and SUNNY apartment has four rooms (a bedroom, a living room, two studies) plus a kitchen, a bathroom and a spacious chamber. The apartment is located in the north-east of Berlin, directly in the up-and-coming PRENZLAUER BERG neighborhood (also called by its shortcut: Prenzl.berg), arguably the city's most beautiful, vibrant and exciting area. While our street is wonderfully calm and family-friendly, you will find cute little cafés and excellent restaurants, trendy nightclubs and cool shopping locations, museums and movie theaters, parks and sports fields, as well as everything from a pharmacy to the post office just around the corner within a couple of minutes walking distance.
Young families, students, and professionals from the media and entertainment industry (as well as a lot of Germany's TV celebreties) make up a large part of the neighborhood's young, aspiring, and gay-friendly population, while it is at the same time amazingly international. You can be sure to run into people from all over the world in Prenzlauer Berg - and, of course, find everything from Russian specialty stores to finest Italian trattorias or French bakerys to all sorts of Asian shops and restaurants as well as movies from the US and music from South America.
Famous Prenzlauer Berg-areas such as the well-known Kollwitzplatz or the Helmholzplatz, the popular boulevard Kastanienallee (also called 'casting alley'), or the very busy Mauerpark (especially on the weekends with Berlins largest weekly flea market with ten thousand visitors) are only a stone's throw away.
But the rest of Berlin's exciting places are not far away either: there are various metro-, train-, underground-, streetcar- and bus-stations within a five to ten minutes walk, connecting you to Berlin's two airports, sights, and all other places of interest.
You can even be in Hamburg, Warsaw (Poland), Prague (Czech Republic), or at the Baltic sea (Germany's beautiful seacoast in the north-east) within just a little train ride. We are Patrick (a freelance journalist: culture and media) and Bastian (a Ph.D. student in Chicago & Berlin: German and comparative literature), a couple of eleven years, married, in our early thirties, and love movies, music and art, love to read, spend time im museums, cherish travelling, enjoy the world and explore different places and cultures.
We have already swapped a couple of times and loved every single one of them. You just cannot compare it to a stay in an anonymous hotel - as beautiful as it may be. Swapping homes always made us immediately feel at home in places we have never been to before and where we suddenly felt to be a part of the new neighborhood. It is simply the most wonderful way of spending holidays for us.
We like sunny beaches just as much as lively cities and are always open to new adventures, new places around the world, and people from everywhere - so surprise us if you want to.
If you have questions, please do not hesitate to send us an email - we are looking forward to it.
