We live in an attractive attic flat occupying the whole fourth floor of a 1940s house, standing in its own garden with mature trees. The flat is very light and sunny with pleasant views in all directions. There is a spacious living/dining area with one larger and two smaller bedrooms and kitchen opening off it. The main bedroom has a large double bed under the eaves, the tower room a small double and the third room a small single bed suitable for a child. There is also a spare mattress. There is a very small balcony, just big enough for two people to stand on. The house is very quiet and the garden little used as none of the other occupants of the house have children. It is located in a quiet side street lined with mature horse-chestnut trees, with other houses, like ours, with their own garden.

We have three bicycles that you can borrow but we have no car. There is a parking space you can use if you bring your own car, however.

It is a safe, quiet, moderately well-off neighbourhood away from the city centre. Getting into the centre of Budapest takes about 20 minutes by public transport. There is a main road with trams and buses into the center about 250 metres away. It is about 10 minutes walk to a small shopping mall with most types of shop, including greengrocer's, delicatessen, health food shop, butcher's, fishmonger's, wine merchants, banks, small supermarket, etc. There are very few restaurants close to our flat (an exception is a very nice Itailan restaurant, Alessio, about 5 minutes walk at Pasareti ut 55), but it is a short tram ride (7 minutes) to Szell Kalman square (also called Moszkva ter), the main transport hub of Buda, with a large shopping mall containing a full range of shops, restaurants, cinemas, bars, and a covered market selling local produce. The historic castle district of Budapest is in the same area, and the commercial center of the city can be reached in about 20 minutes by public transport, which is frequent, clean and reliable. In the other direction, trams and buses provide easy access (10-15 mins) to the attractively wooded Buda hills, ideal for strolling and hiking. Budapest is offers a varied cultural life (opera, classical, jazz, folk, film, restaurants, coffee houses) and is an ideal hub for those keen to visit Central Europe, with easy train access to Vienna, Prague, the Tatra mountains and Transylvania.

My husband John and I both work at an American graduate university in Budapest. John is a teacher and I am a researcher. We have two children, a girl, Anna, aged 19 and a boy, Kolya, aged 6. We like to travel and have both lived for longer periods in other countries. We have two previous exchanges through this site and are keen to exchange again. We speak French, German, Russian, Croatian, and Hungarian, so you can write to us in these languages if you need to.
