Our house goes back to the late 19th century, which means no elevator to the third floor, but also wooden floors, high windows and stucco ceilings. It is located in a quiet side street, with charming bakeries and coffee shops right outside the door – and, beloved by us, the infamous Stagger Lee bar; voted Best German Cocktail Bar in 2012 and absolutely worth the visit. Our supermarket (5 min.) is one of the few in Berlin to be opened around the clock (except Sundays). We count ourselves lucky to have very amiable neighbors who never complain.
There is a king size bed in the bedroom, a sofa bed for two sleepers in the living room and a loft bed (also for 2) in the children’s room. The apartment offers a wide screen television (plus DVD), WI-FI high-speed Internet, several tabletop radios and a stereo system – and a piano, should you prefer to make music yourself. The wonderful open kitchen has a refrigerator and a dishwasher, the bath room has a shower and a tub as well as a washing machine & dryer. Our apartment may be nice, but the real advantage is its location: Set between Nollendorfplatz and Winterfeldtplatz in the middle of Berlin’s western city, in a neighborhood renowned for its restaurants, bars & antique stores, for the city’s biggest farmer’s market – and for its lively gay scene. The Nollendorfplatz fame goes back to the Roaring Twenties when it used to be the very center of Berlin nightlife. (In fact, the flat in which Christopher Isherwood resided and gathered his ideas for “Cabaret” is just across the street.) Nowadays, our neighborhood has become a bit more relaxed. It is home to many artists, film makers & novelists.
And of course Nollendorfplatz is Berlin’s only underground station where four lines meet, so you’ll always find your way back home no matter where you stray. The U-Bahn will take you anywhere, but a great many places can be reached on foot: Zoo Station and the zoological gardens, the Kurfürstendamm and the KaDeWe, the Tiergarten and Potsdamer Platz with its museums, concert halls, cinemas and theatres. We are a family of four; Swea (35) (who is a project manager in a PR-agency) and Robert (40) (who is a screen writer and novelist) plus our children, a girl of 6 and a boy of 4. Due to allergies we cannot go to homes where there are pets. We’d be delighted to swap accommodations and will answer any questions you might still have!
