Description of our house
Our house is a three-storey, terraced house in a very friendly street in East Oxford. Built in the 1860's, there are oak floors throughout the ground floor - with rugs in the winter. Terraced houses are joined on both sides to their neighbours - which is very snug. (By the way, in case you were concerned by news of floods in Oxford, we are well above any possible flood levels.)
We have a very large, well-stocked kitchen/dining room with an opening glass wall to our small (but exquisite) garden with barbeque. The living room has CH and a wood-burning stove which can heat the whole house. We will leave wood.
The bedrooms are small by US standards (but not by European) and the stairs are steep. We modernised and enlarged in 2002 and installed a new wet room and bathroom. The loft bedroom has a view of Magdalen College Tower (pronounced Maudlin here!) and the Radcliffe Camera.
We don't have a TV, but have hundreds of CDs and a stereo. Bring your own laptop for dvd and games playing: ours will do internet and email. A car would be useful for your holiday, but isn't essential. London / Stratford / Warwick are an easy day trip.
We have lived in this house for 20 years and still love it. We have a group of friends and neighbours locally who will help out if you want them to or leave you to yourselves if you prefer. Our cleaner comes once a week to keep the mess at bay.

Our neighborhoodVibrant Cowley Road, with its world food, good shopping (if you like the peculiar), supermarket, nightlife and interesting (in all senses of the word) atmosphere, is only a few hundred yards away (but out of earshot!). While it can seem a bit wild, we both roam the streets at all hours and feel safe.
We have a cinema just up the road (The Ultimate), dvd hire (Videosyncratic), Lebanese, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Italian, Caribbean, Russian, Thai: you-name-it you can eat it here. The Zodiac/Academy is a fab music venue 5 minutes walk away where you get all sorts of music including, 'you saw them here first' new bands and, 'are they still alive?' icons.
We are a few minutes walk from the River Thames (called the Isis as it flows through Oxford)and the centre of the city (and there are buses). There are buses to London / Heathrow every 20 minutes one block away and frequent trains. People of all ages and shapes cycle around - nuns to rastas to mums with kids in tow.
In the city, the classical music, theatre and dance scene is good and well worth checking out if you are planning a visit. We also have museums and galleries, a Literary Festival, The Carnival (now that is audible!!) Art Weeks, Carol Services in colleges, Folk Festival - and of course, Oxford is an absolutely gorgeous city with punting, architecture, countryside and history. There are mainstream cinemas and world class restaurants in and around Oxford – including Raymond Blanc’s ‘Manoir au Quat’ Saisons.’

Something about ourselvesHazel and I are a professional couple - John, a Social Care Commissioner and Hazel, a Recruitment Consultant to the international NGO/not-for-profit sector. We are rather social beings and go out (or stay in) with friends often.
We have both travelled extensively in Europe, E Africa, NZ and the Americas over the years and are keen to see more. We have house-swapped informally with friends of friends but are new to the formal swap holiday. We are most keen on wilderness or big city holidays and less keen on night-clubbing or beach-only holidays (although walking/sightseeing/culture holidays with beach are lovely.) We are open to ideas, so would welcome any interesting offers.
We like theatre, music (classical, rock, world and folk) eating out, eating in, walking, travel, cinema and reading.
