Our house can sleep up to 8 adults and 1 baby. We have a large and sunny garden room, dining room, sitting room and kitchen, utility and pantry on the ground floor, plus a good sized room with double sofa bed, right next to a shower room off the hallway. Upstairs we have the Master bedroom (double with ensuite); Bedroom 2 (double with wash basin); Bedroom 3 (twin beds plus cot, also with wash basin), and a house bathroom.
We have a dog ourselves, (a sweet border collie called Norah) but would not expect anyone to look after her. She will be in kennels or with a friend while we are away.
Our house has plenty of parking space at the front, a courtyard accessed from the kitchen and dining room at the side, and a large garden with two sitting out areas at the back. There are fruit trees, a vegetable plot, and flower borders. It is centrally situated in the old part of the village, which is a designated Conservation Area. Bishopthorpe is an attractive and very well equipped village, less than 10 minutes drive (or 20 minutes by bicycle - there is a cycle path) from the centre of York. Very handy for the historic city itself, plus York Racecourse, riverside walks, long distance cycle tracks. We are an hour's drive from the Yorkshire coast to the east, or from the Yorkshire Dales National Park (to the north west) and North York Moors National Park (north).
Bishopthorpe Palace is a beautiful ancient building on the edge of the village, on the riverside, and is the home of the Archbishop of York - the second highest clergyman in the Church of England, after the Archbishop of Canterbury.
In the village of Bishopthorpe is a small supermarket (just opposite the house), post office, chemist, bakers, butchers, hairdressers, three pubs (all do food), church, doctors and dentists surgeries. All these are in less than 10 minutes walk, while buses into York run every half hour during the day.
York is a great city for visitors - there are too many things to see and do for me to list! http://www.visityork.org gives you lots of ideas of what there is. We shall leave full details of entertainments, cinemas, theatres, museums etc. for you to see when you come. Richard is an architect, and works mainly on old buildings, including ours! He has designed the modern extension at the back of the house, which was formerly the coach house and stable, and now forms a lovely garden room which we use all the year round.
Jane is a town planning consultant, and we are both self employed, working from home, which we love. Our two daughters are now grown up, and one is married with a baby girl, so we are very proud grandparents!
We are flexible with dates, and enjoy seeing different parts of the world, so hope for some exciting exchanges!
Having done a very successful weekend exchange with a couple from London, we are very interested in doing shorter term swaps in the UK: do get in touch!
