Our second home is a white villa with Arabian Nights-style windows and doors in Dahab, a sleepy little town where the Sinai desert meets the beautiful, translucent Red Sea.
The villa has two very large bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with twin beds. Both bedrooms have their own separate doors into the garden where there is a splash pool. The garden has a high wall around it for privacy.
The kitchen has black marble worktops and black marble breakfast bar which separates it from the spacious lounge. There is a sofa in the lounge which converts into a double bed. There is a spare double mattress which can also be placed on the lounge floor, two hammocks on the veranda and cushions for the roof terrace with roofed pergola, giving lots of sleeping or relaxation opportunities!
There is air conditioning throughout the villa. There is a gas cooker, electric fridge/freezer and electric washing machine. The bathroom is a wet room with large corner bath, shower, wc and double sinks. Dahab is a quiet, laid-back town on the edge of the Sinai desert on a beautiful bay, ideal for learning to scuba dive as it is so calm with lots of shore diving. There is also great boat diving and fabulous dive sites including the infamous Blue Hole and Canyon. The diving is truly wonderful here.
The atmosphere is very relaxing in Dahab - people are very friendly and welcoming here. The villa is only five minutes from the sea and you can easily see the sea from the roof terrace. There is also a wonderful view of the Sinai mountains from the roof. The villa is situated in a very authentic part of town, where it is not uncommon to see camels or goats wandering in the streets. It is approx. ten minutes' walk, or perhaps fifteen if you are strolling to take in the sights, to the main seafront (Lighthouse) area where you can find many cafes and restaurants and where, for the price of a drink, you can lounge all day on a sunbed if that is your preference.
In the evening the seafront comes alive, with the bars, restaurants and shops open into the small hours of the night. Some of the bars and cafes are still in Bedouin style, where you lounge on large cushions on the floor to eat your meal and where you can lay afterwards, listening to music and really relaxing.
There are excursions available in the town, including trips into the desert on camels or in jeeps for Bedouin feasts. If you want to go further afield, you can arrange trips to Cairo or Sharm El Sheikh, or even Jordan. Dahab is approx. one hour's drive from Sharm El Sheikh airport. We are George and Carolyn, a married couple from England. We are both professionally qualified social workers who love travelling. We have never done a home exchange before but have a lovely second home in Egypt which is only currently used for three or four weeks a year when we can get away, and we would love to allow other people the opportunity to enjoy it whilst giving us in exchange the opportunity to see other parts of the world.
We usually travel with George's brother and his wife, or our son and his partner, and therefore would be looking to exchange with someone who can offer at least two bedrooms. We would generally expect to arrange an exchange a little way in advance in order to get to know our fellow exchangers via email first to see how best we can facilitate their stay in the UK. However we would not need to exchange at the same time and therefore feel we can offer a great deal of flexibility.
We love to swim, snorkel and scuba dive and as the scuba diving is world-class in Dahab, this is why we bought a villa here. We generally try to visit other places where we can indulge our scuba diving 'habit', especially if there is shore diving available. We are George and Carolyn, a married couple from England.
