Our condo is just the right size for us and our 2 miniature pinchers. It's big enough to have everything we need, but small enough that it's easy to take care of. The floors are porcelain and the finishes are all Ecuadorian wood, including the kitchen and bathroom counter tops. The bedroom has a king bed and flat-screen TV. The master bath has a jacuzzi tub with shower. There are 2 sofa beds in the living area and a half bath for guests. We enjoy sitting or using the hammock on the terrace. We love to watch the tide and stroll across the street to walk along the beach with our dogs. The condo has an 8-person hot tub on the roof with panoramic views of the city, the Pacific Ocean, the Chone River and the coastal ranges. There's also a sauna, exercise room, and an exercise pool. The building also has a back-up generator and it's own desalination plant. There are boogie boards and snorkels and fins in the condo for your use.

Bahia de Caraquez is a slow-paced city of about 30,000 inhabitants.
Bahia is 1.5 hours from the Manta airport.

Bahia has all the basics. There are small grocery stores in the city and a larger chain store is coming to town in 2013. There is a farmer's market with a good variety of fresh vegetables and fruit. You can buy fresh-caught fish from a fisherman on the street or go to one of the many restaurants that serve fresh seafood and Ecuadorian ceviche.

You don't need a car in Bahia. Everything is walking distance from the condo, and you can also take a taxi or one of the easy-to-find eco friendly bicycle taxis (50 cents to most destinations).

There's an area where people surf within walking distance of the condo and the funky beach town of Canoa just 30 minutes away is one of the most popular surfing beaches in Ecuador.

My husband and I retired to Latin America almost 9 years ago. He is a retired professor of anthropology and I am a retired cartographer. Our interest in birds what what originally attracted us to Ecuador (1600+ species). We taught English in Cuenca, Ecuador for 2 years and created a small school -- Escuelita Amistad -- on our rural property in the Yunguilla Valley to teach English to the campesinos. In Bahia, we enjoy the friendly local people and their efforts at preserving the environment (there is a new recycling center and the first mangrove friendly shrimp farm was created nearby). Bahia de Caraquez has been a good place from which to explore other parts of the lovely Ecuador coast parts of this amazingly diverse country to explore.
