Ours is a comfortable and open family home on our 38 acre tropical mountain farm. I don't recall the word elegant ever being used to describe our lifestyle. We have no precious antiques or fragile furniture, and your family can relax and enjoy the books that fill our shelves. We do have lots of cooking equipment and supplies..a KitchenAid mixer, Cuisinart food processor, coffee grinder; everything from baking parchment to crumpet rings. Lots of cookbooks, too. WE DON'T HAVE A TV.

Our town, Ciudad Colon, has good meat and fish markets, a supermarket, and a few nice restaurants. There's also a Saturday morning outdoor fruit and veggie market. We enjoy the pool in a local recreation complex, only minutes from our home. We're about 20-40 minutes from everything else...excellent supermarkets, international airport, the capital...San Jose, and a US-affiliated, well-equipped hospital. Several international schools are also nearby. The Pacific Ocean is 1+ hour away over good roads, and the Caribbean is 3 hours. The exchange includes a car insured for guests and being met at the airport by our bilingual friend/agent. Our altitude of 3,000' means that there's no need for either heating or for cooling. There are several really good restaurants within 5-30 minutes drive. Spanish is helpful, but not necessary. There is wireless Internet access, and a desktop computer for your use.

We also have a 2 bedroom cabin on the Skagit River in WA, between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. that can be exchanged. Great trout and salmon fishing.

We're in a rural area of low mountains, about a kilometer from a town of 10,000. We have both Spanish and English-speaking neighbors. Ciudad Colon is a friendly small town with a modern supermarket, good meat and produce markets, and good public transportation. The U.N.-chartered University for Peace is located outside our town.

THIS IS A DEVELOPING COUNTRY IN THE TROPICS! We have insects, snakes, spiders, monkeys, parrots, toucans, sloths, lizards...that's why people come here...to see them. If you don't like animals, jungle, Spanish, the countryside...this is NOT the place for you. Our home is NOT a luxury destination, and life in Costa Rica is very labor-intensive. It's also very unscheduled...nothing seems ever to happen "on time".

Our home is on a mountainside and the terrain is a bit steep...although having the car means no serious climbing on the finca. We've raised three children here, had hundreds of guests, and done 70-something exchanges. The people who have most enjoyed exchanging with us have been adventurous, flexible, and fit. We've exchanged with many enthusiastic birders, as well. We're happy to answer questions about trips to the coasts and other local attractions.

We're Sharon and Dick, and 22 year old Maia. I'm a family doctor and have a small artisan sausage and breads business. Dick is an ex-professor of geochemistry and is retired from work as a systems analyst and international computer consultant. Maia has always been home schooled and is interested in art and writing. We have two other kids, one moving soon to Seattle and the other in Geneva, Switzerland.

Our home and town are ideal for a family wanting a gentle cultural/Spanish immersion experience, or an introduction to the country for prospective relocators or retirees. We sometimes have a small home on the finca to rent. Just ask.
