Description of our house

Our home is an updated "tico" (how the Costa Ricans refer to themselves) house which was built in the 1970's by the government-owned utility company which sunk 3 towns and created Lake Arenal for hydropower for the country (however, it is also a big windsurfing destination). The house has 3 small bedrooms, 2 twin beds and a futon which sleeps 2, 1 bath, fireplace in open dining-living room, and a modern kitchen. It is situated high on a hill, there are 2 patios, one surrounded by plants and the other with great views to Lake Arenal and Tenorio Volcano. The property consists of 3/4 acre and has many fruit trees including orange and mango as well as macadamia trees and the property is bordered with hibiscus and croton plants.

Our neighborhood

Our home is located in the mountains, temperatures range from 65F in the evenings to 85F in the day year-round. The house is located in Tronadora (a quiet "Tico" (what Costa Ricans refer to themselves) town and has a lovely view of Lake Arenal and Tenorio Volcano. The town has a supermarket, bar and restaurant, and other shops where bus service is excellent and inexpensive to any location in Costa Rica. The beaches on the Pacific Coast are a 1 hour and 30 min. drive. From our home you can conveniently travel to rain forests, volcanoes, hotsprings, cloud forests, or the playas on the Pacific coast. The nearest large city is Liberia which has an international airport and is a 1 hour 10 minute drive. If you are looking for a quiet little town, not located in a "gringo" gated community, here you will experience a real Costa Rican community where the biggest attraction in town is the "futbol" field and the church in the center of town.

Something about ourselves

My husband and I are both retired from the U.S. We live in Downeast, Maine from May-October where we operate bed and breakfast cottages and a little breakfast restaurant (see the Homepage). When the cold and snow get too much for us here, we retreat to our Costa Rican home.
