Perched on the edge of the canyon of the Rio Grande, the grand canyon of Costa Rica, our Costa Rican paradise is located at an altitude of 800 meters (2500ft) above sea level. This insures an almost perfect climate, therefore no need for air conditioning. Days are sunny and warm and evenings are cool with gentle breezes, perfect for sleeping. We are located in the Central Valley of Costa Rica, 15 minutes from the San Jose international airport, 35 minutes from the capital of San Jose, and 10 minutes from three bustling towns, Grecia, Naranjo, and Sarchi. The property is designed to take advantage of one of the best climates in the world, which means living outdoors as much as possible. The villa consists of a “rancho” which is an area for entertaining overlooking an infinity pool and the canyon, it is the center of our daily life. The Rancho has a fully equipped kitchen with fridge, gas cook top and oven, microwave, dishwasher, barbecue and a built in wood fired pizza oven. A large covered terrace means that you can be outdoors rain or shine. We eat every meal outside.

The house has wooden cathedral ceilings which is a great architectural feature and gives it an open airy feeling. There are two identical bedrooms with queen size beds, and large closets. A one three piece bathroom also has laundry facilities. The kitchen and dining room are rarely used as the “Rancho” is where we cook and eat.
There is an outdoor shower, surrounded by tropical gardens, the perfect place to begin your day.
A large deck/patio wraps around two sides of the house. The property has lush tropical gardens which have been a labour of love for the past twelve years.
Seeing is believing, you will be transported into a tropical paradise. This is truly what people think Costa Rica should be!

Our Costa Rican paradise is located in a gated community, with very easy access to the highway. Our property is extremely private, as we are located on a large piece of land and lush tropical gardens. There is a magnificent view overlooking the canyon of the Rio Grande with no man made structures in sight, only a nature preserve.
The neighbourhood is rural with fields of sugar cane, coffee and vegetables.
There are three towns within a 10 minute drive; the largest is Grecia which is a bustling place with most amenities, the other two, smaller towns are Naranjo and Sarchi. Sarchi is famous for its wood artisans and in the past oxen drawn carts. Naranjo is the location of a coffee co-operative “Café Espirito Santo”, and worthwhile visiting.
All towns have farmers’ markets at various times during the week; this is a colourful experience which should not to be missed.
The capital city of San Jose is a 35 minute drive away if you are interested in international cuisine, museums, galleries and theatres.
From our property you have easy access to all the tourist attractions and eco-adventures that Costa Rica has to offer, either day trips or overnight.
If you like the beach, the closest is Jaco on the Pacific coast, about a one hour drive. Arenal Volcano and Tabacon Hot Springs (a world class spa) are overnight trips.
The green parks of Manuel Antonio, Monteverde, and Tortuguero are also overnight excursions.
For the more adventurous there is white water rafting, zip lining, and bungee jumping.
World famous Poas Volcano is an hour’s drive as well as La Paz Waterfall Gardens. Closer to home you can visit a bird zoo “Zoo Ave”, serpentarium, botanical gardens, butterfly gardens, a coffee tour at “Café Espirito Santo” and many more pleasant destinations.
If you’re a bird lover you will not be disappointed as our lush gardens attract dozens of species to watch. Many different types of birds and butterflies visit often. On a lucky day a group of toucans will perch in a tree within view of the house or rancho.
And if that is not enough fun…well there is always a hammock or the swimming pool.
Oh, and in the Rancho you will find a wood burning pizza oven if you want to try your hand at making pizza or bread.

We are Mario and Carolyn, both retired from dentistry, Mario as a dentist and Carolyn as a dental hygienist. Mario was born in Portugal and Carolyn in Canada. We have one daughter who recently married. We have travelled extensively all over the world, but this is our first attempt at home exchange. We are both physically active, and have many interests. Mario likes to rejuvenate old cars, especially Mercedes, and Carolyn likes to cook, paint and make glass jewelery. We live half the year in Costa Rica and the other half in Canada. We enjoy meeting new people and would like to share our paradise in Costa Rica.
