Our home is in a quiet, family-oriented suburban neighbourhood. Our backyard is beautifully landscaped and adjoins a wooded area. There is a raised deck and a patio for relaxation. We are a 5-10 minute walk to a major shopping mall which incorporates a local transportation hub with buses to the city. By car we are about 12 minutes to the centre of downtown Waterloo.

The main floor has a large eat-in kitchen attached to a family-room with a flat screen TV. This area opens to a sun room, overlooking trees and woods in the back. Also on the main floor are a livingroom, dining room, laundry room and powder room. Upstairs are three bedrooms, one of which has been converted to a study plus two full bathrooms, one of which is ensuite to the main bedroom.

The basement of the house is fully finished with a further TV/family room, large office and full bathroom. There is a pullout couch for 1 person.

Our family car, a 2012 Hyundai Sonata , seats 5 people, would be available.

If our adult son travels with us (and he frequently does) his one bedroom condo in downtown Toronto would also be available.

Waterloo is situated in southwestern Ontario surrounded by rolling farmland, gentle hills and many well established and orderly Mennonite farms. Horses and buggies can often be seen on the side roads. Waterloo Region is a blend of vibrant rural and urban living.

It is a cultural and recreational mosaic of opportunity to pursue career, passions and lifestyle activities. Enriched by artists, writers and musicians, theatre performers snd the many nations represented by the immigrant population, the region offers a unique 'high-tech-academic-cultural-culinary' experience. Typical events like free public lectures on hot topics in physics research, orchestra performances by our excellent symphony orchestra and world class golf courses are all available here in Waterloo Region.

A twice-weekly Farmers' Market in nearby St. Jacobs, draws bus tours from as far away as Pennsylvania. It is a mere 12 minute drive north of our house. Tourism and water activities are major attractions in this region, and several of the Great Lakes are within an easy one-day outing from Waterloo. Summer/Fall theatre abounds in this region. For example, the Stratford Festival Theatre and the Shaw Festival Theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake are between 1-2 hours drive. Toronto and Niagara Falls are easily reached in 1 and 1/2 hours. The border to the United States in Buffalo is about 2 hours by car.

Another interesting attraction in this part of south western Ontario is the renowned wine growing region. The wines are internationally recognized. Tours of wineries and associated gourmet restaurants abound. This region is within a 1 1/2 hour drive from Waterloo.

Waterloo is the home of two major Canadian universities, a Research and Technology Centre, including the renowned Stephen Hawking Centre at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, and CIGI (Centre for International Governance Innovation). It is the home of RIM (Research in Motion), the inventor and manufacturer of the Blackberry.

Historically Kitchener, which is a sister/adjacent city to Waterloo, was once named Berlin. There is a strong history of German emigration to this region as evidenced by the presence of several actve German social Clubs. As well, the largest Oktoberfest in the world outside of Munich takes place here every fall.

We are Alex and Marlene, retired seniors from professional occupations (civil/environmental health engineer and teacher). Marlene has just graduated with her Bachelor of Social Work degree from the University of Waterloo, while Alex enjoys playing tennis several times a week. We have lived and worked abroad in Switzerland, Jordan and Bangladesh while Alex was employed by the World Health Organization.

We enjoy travelling immensely. We have done a very successful home exchange in 2012.
