Our home sits on the hill just across a country road from the lake. It is quite large and spacious with lots of windows and lots of light, with views from most of the rooms. The house has four bedrooms, with one that is set up as an office and we have high speed wireless service throughout the house. There are three decks and a nice size fenced backyard on the lake side of the house. We look down the lake and see one small corner of the lovely city of Nelson. There is nothing like sitting in the hot tub on a clear cold night and watching the intense star-filled Kootenay skies. Our home sits on the hill just across a country road from the lake. Nelson is a small city of 10,000 people nestled in the Selkirk Mountain Range in an area known as the West Kootenays. Nelson is a very interesting and eclectic community with a counter culture vibe and an active arts community. It has more heritage buildings than any comparably sized community in all of Canada and the main street is a treat to wander and explore. The area is also know for its hot springs and in particular Ainsworth with its unique caves. Check it out at http://www.hotnaturally.com. It is about 30 to 40 minutes away and on the main lake with stunning vistas.
We are located just three miles outside of town so everything is ten minutes away at the most and yet you are in a quiet rural setting. Nelson is almost exactly half way between Vancouver and Calgary and sits just 20 miles or so from the US border.
Nelson is a very unique and special community and we are certain you will love it after just a few days of exploring.
Nelson is also extremely well located for short tours. We are three hours away from the southern Okanagan valley communities of Osoyoos, Oliver and Narmata (Canada's answer to the Napa Valley ) with excellent wineries and restaurants . It is only a short distance further to the resort communities of Penticton, Kelowna and Vernon.
Head east and take a six hour scenic drive up the Rocky Mountain trench of the East Kootenays to arrive at beautiful Banff National Park in the heart of the majestic Rocky Mountains. Visit Lake Louise and continue driving over the highest mountain pass in Canada through the skiing villages of Golden and Revelstoke to complete the circle back to Nelson. Or, go the other way and circle through Alberta and visit Calgary, Canada's fasted growing city and home of the Calgary Stampede. Either way, the Rockies are one of those "must see" destinations.
Be sure to plan a little time at the beginning or end to explore the beauty of Vancouver. We are Don and Jeanette, recently retired and looking forward to the next stage of our lives. Jeanette worked with the federal government in community development programs and Don the better part of his career with International Development organizations working in the developing world. We both have travelled extensively and feel the next few years are prime time to add significantly to our list of countries and places.
We also have a second home in Goodyear Arizona that is available for possible exchanges but not this winter. We have pictures of the Arizona house for anyone that might wish to see them.
