We live in possibly the best part of town here in Graz, Austria's second-biggest city. In 2003, Graz was European Capital of Culture and has always been renowned for its cultural offer (opera house, classical concerts, museums etc.), its many students (around 50.000 form all around the world) and for its Italian charm.
We bought the brand new penthouse in 2015. One could definitely describe it as luxurious; it comes with two parking bays in the underground parking, a large terrace and an elevator, that directly connects our floor with the parking. The apartment offers three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms with showers, a large entry hall with guest toilet, a very modern open living-dining-kitchen area and a second entry to one of the bedrooms/guestrooms. The master bathroom contains a bathtub besides the shower and a heat cabin. Two of the bedrooms have king-size beds, one comes with a queen-size bed. All three of them offer cable tv and internet. Up to six people can sleep comfortably in our home.
Like every modern household we can offer TV/cable (4), Blu Ray/DVD-player, Stereo/HiFi, high speed internet, Wireless Internet access; the kitchen contains amongst other things: ceramic stove with oven, microwave, dishwasher, steamer etc. Naturally, there is an internal laundry with washing machine, dryer, ironing board, wine cooler, and so on.
Our apartment complex lies nestled in between the university suburb, a big hospital complex and a large park with green woods and a small lake. Nevertheless, we are incredibly close to the city center, which can be reached in 5 min by car or 10-15 min by tram, (two stops are only a 3 min walk away). Within a few minutes walking, you get to our local bakery and supermarket. The bigger shopping centers are either in the city or on the edge of town but are all accessible via public transport, or, of course, by car. Our neighbors are very nice, quiet people, university professors, entrepreneurs, MDs etc.
Graz in itself often is described as the world's smallest major city, or the biggest small town. It offers extensive flair, culture and all kinds of entertainment, yet also the possibility to easily get to other fantastic places in Europe. Most of them can be reached within a few hours by car or train. Here are a few examples: Vienna 200 km, Venice 430 km, Budapest 430 km, Ljubljana 200 km, Zagreb 190 km, Salzburg 280 km or Munich 420 km.
While Graz is not a skiing destination as such, there is a superb range of winter sports available close-by. A number of skiing regions are less than one hour away. Schladming is the city that will host the ski world championship in 2013, and it is less than two hours’ drive away.
For those who enjoy swimming there are many public indoor pools around the city, as well as fantastic thermal spas about an hour’s drive away from Graz.
Our International Airport is only 30 min from the house, offering a large number of flights daily. Low fare airlines tempt you with short trips to Düsseldorf, Berlin, Zürich, Frankfurt, London, Mallorca and many more great cities around Europe.
We own two adorable drama-free cats who enjoy being both in- and outdoors, as one stays at home/on the terrace and the other one uses our cat-ladder! Therefore, we are unfortunately unable to invite dogs.
We would much appreciate a car exchange and can gladly offer: 2012 Skoda Yeti, 2002 Smart Cabrio, 2001 Audi TT Cabrio, or a 1932 Chevy Roadster.. whatever pleases you.
We are both in our late 50ies/early 60ies (non-smokers) and have two wonderful grown-up children. Herta, my wife is retired, she worked as a teacher in a high school and I (Richard) am an entrepreneur (vintage cars and real estate).
Our daughter Stephanie lives and works in Sydney and would be happy to get in touch with people interested in exchanging houses.
Our son Niki who lives in Graz and Vienna will not travel with us and can thus be of assistance with the house hand-over.
We all love travelling and Herta and myself have had some 18 successfull exchanges during the last few years
